Any guitar players here?

I'm feeling musical, and learning how to/playing the guitar is on my list of things to do in life.

Anyone got an axe? Any recommendations for a starter piece? Acoustic or electric is okay with me, although I plan on buying an electric.

No guitar but I've got a banjo...I'm trying to teach myself in my free time.

I don't have much so I suck.

Good luck with it...

I highly recommend a Lotus (it's a Fender Stratocaster knock-off). I had one years ago and it was great. I deeply regret selling it...

Here's the best site on the net for guitar reviews:

Hope this helps...

BTW, IMHO the best playing, feeling and priced guitars are Peavy T-60's. I've had one for over 10 years, and love playing it...
I've played on most brands and styles, everything from Les Pauls, Gibsons, Fender, Peavy... You name it... I can't think of anything I'd like to own more so than the T-60.

I'm not any good, but I like to think I am...:o

How about a bass guitar. What's a good one for a noob? I've been thinking of giving that a try.

Start with electric, then when you have some callouses built up, get an acoustic if you want to. Buy as much guitar (quality) as you can afford up front, stay away from "el cheapos" because you want to enjoy playing it. If you have a crappy sounding, difficult to play piece of junk, you will not want to practice. Besides if you decide the guitar is not for you, you can get most of your money back out of a quality instrument.

Get something similar to what your favorite musician plays - If you like Clapton, SRV, Hendrix, David Gilmour - get a Strat. If you like the Who, AC/DC or Sabbath, go for an SG. It will be easier to get the sound you like if you start with the right guitar.

Amps - well again, get the most quality you can afford, but keep in mind, you don't want to overpower your practice area. Probably start with a 15 or 20 watt "practice" or "bedroom amp" until you get good enough that you don't mind others hearing you. Even a headphone-only amp is ok for starters. You can always get a bigger, fancier amp when you have a better idea of what you like.

Good luck

That is a problem I have. I dont have them and it makes getting the right strings held down very difficult without partially touching the other strings. (Can you tell I'm a newbie?)

The othe thing you'll notice is that after you've been playing for a while the muscle in between your left thumb and the plam of your hand has grown freakishly huge... Hold your thumb tightly against your palm to see what I mean...

Here's what I have:
DeArmond M65 - Crimson red, not the color shown.

Marshall G100rcd - 100watt amp

Marshall angled cabinet w/ 4 - 12's

Someday I'll learn to play too.

I play bass. Started on a Squire Jazz bass (Jazz and Funk were my favourites to play). It was a decent cheap beginners bass, still have it actually, just don't use that one anymore. I didn't really have that many options since im a southpaw.
My dream bass however is an Ibanez 6 string fretless bass, left handed of course.

I got no problem paying for quality - I've bought enough stuff, from skateboards to firearms to tools to optics to know that it's more expensive to buy right the second time around.

Favorite musicians? I have wildly varied tastes in music, I like rock, like Hendrix, Clapton, Zeppelin, the Stones, etc., country, blues, all of it, depending on what mood I'm in.

You know, I've been thinking if I should play left or right handed, since I'm ampidextrous(sp). So it's harder to find left handed equip? I think I'd be playing lefty.

Definately. At least in my little hick town it is. I started right handed and actually bought a right handed bass, but then just played it upside down, even left the strings upside down. Was just more natural for me. Then decided to get my lefty Squire because it was cheap and available.
