Toyota is as concerned about the American Auto makers as we are. It's a public relations thing more than anything. If they destroy the american auto market, it will leave a sour taste in our mouth and that's the last thing they want. It's worth it to them to help us out just for that reason.

Ford has been in bed with Nissan more than GM was (Mercury Villager/Nissan Quest comes to mind) and GM has long been in bed with Toyota (Geo Prism/Toyota Corolla), in fact, GM is a real **** because they've also been in bed with Honda (The 3.5L V-6 in the Saturn VUE is a Honda engine).

I read something a month or three ago that said GM and Toyota were thinking about getting in bed (publicly), and now this has seemingly come up twice in recent memory with Ford. You know, rumors are usually originated in some variation of the truth... All leaks aren't unexpected, sometimes they are sprung to gauge public reaction.

While I'd like to see Ford & GM return to dominance, I must admit, I've enjoyed the current loss of direction in the auto market (from a consumer perspective). It's allowed me to purchase/lease eight cars in the last six years, at great prices. So for the consumer, these have been good times.

But, at the end of the day, if a collaboration between GM, Ford, DC, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, etc.. yields safer, cheaper, better-built vehicles, I can't say I'd be opposed to that possibility.

Toyota could have paid cash for GM in 2005, if they really wanted to take over... They profited more cash that year, than GM was valued at (if memory serves). I seem to recall the GM (Auto manufacturer) losing money in 2005, while the money GM made was from their GMAC division. That had market analysts calling GM a financing company that happens to make cars, as opposed to an auto manufacturer who happens to finance their own vehicles.

Ford has been in cahoots with mazda for a long time. Why get in bed with more auto manu's? I guess that's why I build fighter jets.

On the news they were saying something about Ford wanting to use Toyota's hybrid engines or have Toyota help Ford build better hybrids.

toyota already sold their first generation hybrid to honda. Why do you think honda came out with a hybrid about 2-3 years after toyota did?

I know. So is lincoln, mercury, volvo, land rover, aston martin, and jaguar.

There have been mazda parts on ford/mazda crossed cars and trucks for many many years. Hell my ford probe is all mazda except for the body and interior design.

It had something to do with Ford doing something with Toyota's hybrids but I can't remember exactly what. It was a 3 minute blip on the news and I was trying to do something else at the time so wasn't listening as intently as I wanted to.

i saw something on discovery channel years ago about hybrids this was around 96-97 ford and GM were first starting to toy with hybrids, hydrogen powered and bi fuel and electric cars. but it never picked on so ford sold their research to japan for them to play with, and a few years later toyota came out with the prius, then now that the hybrids are making a big boom because of opec ****'s ford is having talks with toyota about their hybrid technologies.

Ford licensed Toyota's hybrid engines. Basically Ford is using Toyota's hybrid engines in their cars and paying them for each one, similar to a computer company licensing the Windows operating system.
