While Mazda’s largest shareholder is Ford Motor Company, which owns 33.4 percent of the company, it is still a publicly held and traded corporation on the Nikkei exchange.
In 1979 Ford purchased 24.5% stake in Mazda Motor Corporation. This was increased to 33.4% in 1996 where it still stands today.
