Router help
I swear, if only I could access the internet with an abacus...
I recently bought another laptop to use for work, and since I have DSL at home, I figured what the hell, let's get this thing online with my other laptop. A long time ago, I bought a LinkSys router to get an old desktop and my home laptop online together, just never got around to it.
So I tried setting the router up tonight, and the frickin' thing doesn't want to cooperate. It came with a setup CD that I popped in and followed to the letter, but when it gets to the part where it tries to communicate to the router, it says something like "Cannot connect to router, try turning the DSL modem off then on," which I've done several times to no avail. This is on the same page where it's asking something about an SSID and Channel, which I left at their default settings.
All my lights on the router are good to go, everything's connected, so what gives? I can take some screenshots of the error messages in question if anyone wants 'em.
ETA - And now, with nothing connected to the router at all, my other laptop says "Wireless Network Detected."

Sounds like an IP conflict, try this.
Turn off DSL modem, install router.
If everything works then turn it all off, boot DSL modem, wait... when fully booted and connected, boot router, wait... when up then turn on each computer one at a time.
If starts having a problem, then probably IP conflict, so turn off modem. With router connected open a browser, type 192.168.1.1 in the address. Leave username blank, use "admin" for the password.
ON the openeing page, "Setup/basic setup change the IP to 192.168.2.1 click on save changes at the bottom, repeat all boot process, of modem, then router, then computers.
Edited to add:
BTW from now on your routers address would be 192.168.2.1 to acces the router. Same username and same password

What kind of router, and what kind of laptop (what adaptor if you are using one)?
If its one of the routers with the sppedboost technologies, you may have some sort of compatibility conflict. If your laptop does not support that tech, you will most likely need to disable it on the router.

I'm here for a while...
1. Tell me how you have the cables run
2. Give me the error messages
3. Give me the model number of your router

Okay, laptop 1 - this is the one that I currently have connected directly to the DSL modem, is a Sony Vaio FRV26. What I'm trying to do is connect laptop 1 to the router, which is a Linksys BEFW11S4 (version 4) so I can wirelessly access the net with laptop 2, which is a Dell Latitude D610 that has a built in wireless card (the Centrino thing or whatever you wanna call it).
I started off with everything powered down. I connected the CAT5 cable from my modem to the "Internet" port on the router, then from port 1 on the router to laptop 1. I power up the modem, router, and laptop 1, punch in http://192.168.1.1 in IE to get to the setup screen for the router. Looking in the quick setup instructions for the router, I think I'm connecting via PPPoE, so I select that in the router's setup screen, and type in my ISP's username and password in the box that comes up. The whole time, all the lights on the router and modem are lit up as they should be, but if I try to go online with the router connected to laptop A, no go.
The router came with a Quick setup CD, and I tried using it with no go either. It gets to a screen where it sets up the SSID and channel for the router (which I left at the default settings), then click the "Next" button and it shows a little progress bar that says "Configuring Router..." After the progress bar completes, it says "Unable to connect to router, try powering the DSL modem on/off. Do you want to try to connect again?"

I believe in order for the CD to work you have to run the setup while you dont have the router hooked up and are still on the net with just the modem.
If you go to start-->run-->type CMD
then
IPCONFIG and hit enter what is your ip address
then type ping 207.114.0.140 and tell me what happens
Oh and when you get on the net do you have a software screen to log in to or do you just double click IE

I've run the CD without the router connected, still no go. I tried it once with the router connected and it stopped, wouldn't go any further until I disconnected the router and started over again. I just open IE to connect to the net, no log in screens or passwords or such.
You need to do one of 2 things.
Manually set your DNS setting on your network cards or update your router to give them out.
Hook straight up to the dsl modem and run the same commands but add /all after the ipconfig command
write down the dns server addresses that are listed.
hook your router back up and now log into your 192.168.1.1 screen and toward the bottom of the page you should see DNS Server 1 2 and 3 or it may say Static DNS 1 2 3.
Add the numbers you wrote down to 1 and 2....leave 3 empty.
The other option is to double click the NIC icon to the left of your Norton program that is shown in your pic (down by the time)
Go to properties
Double click Internet Protocol
Click "Use the following DNS server addresses"
type the numbers you wrote down in there

I did that while I was connected with the modem directly to the PC - should I have done it with the router connected? If the router is installed, I'm unable to get on the 'net.
do the ping test connected to the router and tell me if you get the same
what about that software login question?
turning in soon so maybe someone here can pick up or I'll follow up in the am

Well, I'm about to call it a night too, I'll fiddle with this thing some more tomorrow evening once I get home from work.
And I don't have to log in to anything, just open IE and I'm there.
