Router help
Try to reset the router, take a paper clip, and press the button in the little hole in the back of the unit for 30 seconds.. Also you really do not neet to use the cd that came with the unit, all the settings can be changed through http://192.168.1.1

Check to make sure the DHCP is turned on on the router because it isn't assigning an IP address.
In fact you may want to try this.
Set it manually...
Refer to my earlier instructions about double clicking on the icon and then properties, Internet protocol.
Set ip address to 192.168.1.50
Set Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
Set default gateway to 192.168.1.1
Set DNS to the two numbers you wrote down before
Redo the ping test and tell me what happens.

Okay, I set all that stuff like you said, and when I did ipconfig /all with the modem connected directly to the PC, it gave me two DNS servers that were the exact same number. When I tried punching those in, a message came up that said that the primary and alternate DNS numbers could not be the same, so I just left one of them in there and the other blank (there were only two spaces for DNS server numbers, BTW).
I got a couple different results when I pinged 207.114.0.140 after that.
The first time, it said "Destination Host Unreachable" and "Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss).
The second time, Norton's popped up and wanted me to assign a location to those specific IP configurations I guess, so I picked one, pinged again and it said "Request timed out" with the same 100% loss.
I tried it one more time with Norton's disabled and got the "Request timed out" message again.

ok so you with the modem to router to computer setup and the IP configed manually
from the cmd prompt try
tracert 207.114.0.140
(Frustrating ain't it....5 minutes there and I could fix it for ya...its gotta be something simple that we are missing...)
oh and try putting your Internet connection type back to Obtain automatically and reboot the router and computer.
1 DNS is really all that is necessary the additional ones are just backups...in fact the 207 number I'm giving you is a DNS server

It's wierd dont ask me..... it works trouble free for almost a year now though.
Edited to add:
We went as far (we is Linksys Teck support and I) as we thought the first router was bad. Took it back got a second and same thing 4 more hours on the phone with tech later, she tried that IP and bingo.....
Only thing I can figure is that 192.168.1.50 is with in the modems IP range.

by default linksys starts at .100 for its DHCP.
as long as the subnet mask is the same setting to .50 should work...in fact that is how do I set my static IP on the computer I'm typing on.

Reset everything to auto, restarted and I'm still screwed.
When you say "set DHCP on," what you meanin'? Where do I do that? And what's a DHCP? Or DNS? This alphabet soup is getting annoying.
And I'm done screwing with this thing tonight. To be continued tomorrow.

DHCP gives out IP addresses and it should be on the first page of your router setup at 192.168.1.1
DNS is what resolves ip addresses to names
ie: 111.44.55.66 = www.somewebpage.com
