Computer Help...

Alright guys and gals, Im working on a laptop that I replaced the HD in, and its up and going, but Im having some problems with the internet.
When I get on the internet, I get pop-ups like these:

That is an example of a few of them, and there are a couple more that pop up too, but they all look the same and pretty much say the same thing.
ALSO, the Internet Explorer Help Index thingy will just pop up randomly.
I just X out of them, but they still pop back up after a short time.
Does anyone know what the he!! is going on, and how I can fix this crap??

Ive installed AVG Anti-Virus, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware, scanned the computer with all three, and also deleted all the Cookies and Temporart Internet Files. I figured that would stop it, but I just keep getting the same thing.

Anyone know whtas going on and how to fix it?
Its my sister's and she is headed off to college tomarrow, and Im hoping I can have it fixed before then, or sometime tomarrow before I leave her dorm(Im going to help move her).
Thanks a bunch

One of my friends wanted me to look at their box and it had similar errors. After about 3 hours of research, I just rebuilt it and was done with it. It was a pain in the a$$, but the rebuild was quicker and cleaned it all up. Good Luck.

1- Antivirus software. Buy or get the free ones from the web.
2- Ad-Aware
3- Spybot
4- Windows defender

All of the above are free. Install and run.

Did you just now replace the HD with a clean install then on first run started getting these?
Is it an OEM version of windows or an actual version?
What IE service pack does it have?

If it is a new clean install on a new or freshly formated HD then you don't have a virus or adware or anything. So skip that. If thats the case then you have files that didn't get copied correctly.

That is someone utilizing the net send command on a computer hooked to the internet without a firewall.

Go into control panel
administrative tools
services
Find "messenger"
double click and disable it.

The minute you do the messenger alerts will stop. It is a security issue as well.

Oh and get a firewall if you are gonna be on the net.

Pss, Ive had the new HD in, and the computer going for a couple weeks, but this is the first time its been on the internet, and it just started now.

I have no idea about the OEM or Actual version of windows, I though windows was windows All I know is that it came on a disk from HP with the new HD.

IE service pack-couldnt tell you that either, sorry, Im just not that computer savy lol. Is there somewhere on the computer that can tell me what version of windows is on it, and what service pack?

I also did what Vader/the link said to do. Havent had the laptop back on the net yet though.
Is there a site that I can download a firewall from? What would be a good one to have?

Thanks for all the help you guys..

This is exactly what it is. It's just the messenger service in Windows XP/2000. SP2 disables this automatically for you so if just do all of your Windows updates that will resolve it as well as install some other security updates you'll probably want anyways.

That is an OEM, it comes with a bunch of other HP crap on it too. An actual version of windows only has Windows and thats it.

An actual version disk looks like this...

Right click on "My Computer", under the General tab it tells you the version of Windows and the Service Pack that is installed.

Yea, I'd say vader is right, I have never encountered this because I have SP2 (Service Pack 2) downloaded and saved. So As soon as I load windows then I install them.

Alright, it says Service Pack 1.

Im on the laptop right now and one of the messages popped up again, but I realized I forgot to hit the "Stop" button in the little process that Vader walked me through. So far, no more of those d@mn things.

So, once I get all the Windows Updates downloaded and installed, I should have Service Pack 2 on here, correct?
Thanks...

Thats what I though, they all say to go to some site to fix it, that why I though the antivirus/spybot/adaware would get rid of it...

But SOB, I just had a little IE help thing pop up again. The one where you click on "Help" then "Contents and Index" on the IE menu bar or whatever its called. Or maybe I just keep accidentally hitting a button that makes it pop up, is that possible?

Its nothing installed on the computer (virus/spyware). People have found a way to use the Windows Messenger Service (not Windows Messenger or MSN) to send messeges to you. These messeges tell you that you're infected and to go to some website to clean but if you go to that website and download their software that is what puts the spyware on your computer.
Have you already stopped the process per Vaders instructions? If not do so and then update your computer and make sure you have every critical update and service pack.
