So I apply for this position. I interview with HR and 3 managers back in New York (The company is re-locating) at 6am this morning.
They made me an offer. 20% lower than what I'm paid now.
I can't really take that kinda hit.
Oh how I want to get out of this pit.

Certainly not if you had to live in N.Y. Especially NYC. If it's Manhattan, no matter how much you are making, it's not enough.
Which brings up today's Thought For The Day
which is:
KILL ALL MANAGERS
(especially middle management)

I turned down a job that is similar to what I am doing now that's about a 3 minute drive from my house.
Remember that one UC? The starting pay was $10 an hour. I make way more then that, and I dont see me taking thta big of a pay cut to save mileage/gas money. Now, if they would have offered me at least 15, we could have talked, they said 10 is starting. A guy I work with (or used to) they offered him $12/hour after about 15 employee's here applied. I guess they got tired of being turned down.
basically, if it's something you'd be interested in.....wait. They might actually give you more.
Yea they knew what I'm making now. I also knew the salary range was below my desired level. I think I'll call them back this afternoon. The top of their salary range is a 10% cut and I'd accept that. The company has a lot more potential than were I'm at now and I wouldnt be working for the devil.
UC be careful this is what you want. But some times money is not everything. If your stress level comes down and you will actually enjoy what your doing then maybe it's okay for a pay cut.
Don't take a serious pay cut just to leave your current employer for no real reason. That's more acting out of emotion then using your brain.

Crap. I was thinking a 10% cut would be $100 per month that that's per pay period so $200 a month. ARGH. Guess I've wasted everybodys time.
I'll tell em I got an offer out of a blue with a company I had previously talked to....

Hey UC. Tell them why you are not excepting the job. They may very well counter back and offer you more money. Obviously they want to save money but if you show that you are worth the money and you are sticking to your guns they may see the benefit of having you and decide to give more.
If you don't ask you don't receive.
If you don't ask you don't receive.
If you really want this job, but the salary offered is unacceptable, then you have nothing to lose by proposing a counter offer. You tell them you are very excited about the opportunity, that you are the right person for the position, and will do an excellent job. You say we are close in terms of the salary but you would need a slight increase (inject what is acceptable here) so that you may take the job. If they say no and you really want to push it you can ask who is reponsible for approving the pay range for the position and ask to speak with them directly.
The cost to live in NY is huge. Some of the most rediculas home pricing in the country. What a lot of people pay for a house is only good for a down payment here. Taxes are another story.
