How about ya Austin, Texas??

Greetings again everyone!

I know most are probably sick of reading my frequent posts regarding information about random cities about the USA...but, here is another!

As some may know, I was recently married...and in a year, am looking to relocate with my wife. Our newest possible destinationis Austin, Texas! I am pretty excited about this place, although I have never been there. The job market there (firefighting) seems to be very good and pays well, with plenty of opportunites for advancement! My wife is looking for a small community hospital to practice as an ER physician.

Anyways, she has been to Austin once and said it was cool, but it was a long time ago. I have found a little information out about it and it seems like a growing place. The cost of living there (real estate) seems to be VERY reasonable! Just looking over a few homes in my price range I have been very impressed.

So, you guys know the drill! Pitch Austin! Lemme know what ya think...things to do, places to see, etc.

My wife and I LOVE live music, good beer, and I think it is about 4 hours from the beach, which is great!

I look forward to all of your replies!

As usual, thank you all in advance for your help!

Best regards,

pgh_medic

You will find plenty of good music, beer, and bars on 6th Street. It is a great party place with literally hundreds of bars.

On the other hand, I'm not a UT fan and always seem to find myself in arguments when drunk.

i loved Austin. when i was stationed at FT Hood i would take the 60 mile drive there.

6th st. is a cool place. lake Travis and all the other lake in the area are good for water sports and recreation. the bridge where millions of bats live is a weird site to see when they leave at dusk. there is always good live music including "Austin City Limits". you can also go tubing in San Marcos on the Guadalupe River.

these are just a few of the thing i did when there.

I plan on retiring in TX. Austin is alway at the top of Best cities lists.

I grew up in a small town about 45 minutes east of Austin. (Thorndale)

Nice place. Hot summers and thunderstorms about this time of the year. There is more good to say about Austin then there is to say bad about it. Like already mentioned....6th St is the shinit for bar hopping. I have always said, "Austin is the party capital of Texas". But, there is a lot more then just that kinda thing. If you like to BASS fish, camp and stuff like that, there are lots of lakes and streams around central Texas.

Man, the list is forever long. I can sit here and ramble on about this and that, but to truely experience it, you have to just go and look.

Keep us informed. I know I'm interested.

Austin is a great place -- wish I lived there (or in San Antonio or in the Dallas-Fort Worth area) instead of in Houston!

Cost of living may seem cheap compared to where you're coming from, but it is actually quite high by Texas standards.

One drawback to the city -- the roadways SUCK and seem to be continually jammed with traffic regardless of the time of day!

Very cool!

Thanks for all of the great information....my wife and I are looking for dtes this summer to fly down and visit.

I think I forogt how BIG camping is with her and I. The outdoors is a HUGE part of our lives and something we really want our children to be exposed to and grow up doing. I am a big hunter, I know Texas is a far cry from the wooded hills of the Allegheny National Forest, but I'll get used to it...already have a flat shooting .270 Rem.

So, I am glad there are places to camp, hike and swim nearby. Maybe Ill hafta look into gettin a boat to tug behind the ole F-150.

Austin is looking good! Does nayone know anything about the local community hospitals...I have heard some good thigns about Round Rock...or anything about the City of Austin FD ot the Travis County FD?

Keep the good info. coming!

If you're looking to be in the Austin area, but still want to be out of the city a ways, Round Rock isn't too bad. It's more "suburban" than "country" nowadays, however.

If you're looking for more of a small, rural town in the area, I'd look towards a town called Bastrop, TX. There's a nice lake there, a state park, it's definitely rural (as of yet), and is still within easy driving distance (a little over 30 minutes?) of Austin.

Buda, TX, and San Marcos, TX, would be other places I would consider....

I've never lived there but my brother lived there for about 5 years. I have been there a few times to visit when he was there. The roads do always seem backed up but it was easy to find where we were going. I always like the Hill Country area and all the lakes.
