Understandable when your countries play no important role whatsoever.
I hate ice hockey, baseball, basketball and American Football.

I live in Toronto... the most multicultural city in the world.

whenever FIFA comes around, I really learn to hate a lot of cultures...

Italians
Brazilians
have got to be the worst in this town for hooliganism around soccer.

I like NFL football, but if you think about it only 20% of the time is actually played, the rest is a bunch of standing around.

MLB Baseball, well maybe like 5%, except for pitcher, catcher, and batter. The rest scrarch and sniff.

NBA Basketball plays much more of a percentage.

NHL Hockey is constant play.

Then there's World Cup soccer. Constant action. Strategy. Physical play. Goal scoring. Saves. Really is the best game on the planet if you look at the numbers. Americans are mostly into instant gratification, that's why they can't wait around for the goal in soccer, but a true soccer fanatic understands that the game is more than scoring goals. I guess that's why you have to be intelligent to play or even watch for that matter at a world cup level.

I don't see any world cup American football tournaments. Boo Hoo. Too boring.

Go ahead and hate, but I'll be one of the many watching and routing for the USA in Germany.

Like it or not, it's the single fastest growing sport in the United States and it's here to stay. Many of us 'younger' guys have grown up in the sport and it's even paid for college for some of us -- further, it continues to help pay the bills by being a referee that does college down to sixteen year olds... Like sports like baseball, basketball, and football, soccer keeps kids busy and off the streets. It teaches discipline, control, keeps them off the couch, and teaches respect. It's another fine addition to the 'big 3' sports that have dominated this country for quite a while. Rather than be adversarial towards it, adapt. It's here... it's not going anywhere. Think about all the soccer goals that you see on your daily commute or during a standard week. It's big folks. Give it a shake here...

In the world's eyes, with the addition of Major League Soccer and the huge success of the US squad in recent past competitions, we're making a name for ourselves within the world's soccer community as a power -- something that we've never accomplished as a country until very very recently. It's here to stay guys. Adapt.

If you're a younger pup -- the odds are very good that your kids will be playing it as well... and may already be playing in PE or similar activities at school. Further, I bet they probably enjoy it. Kids like teams (much like baseball, basketball, and football). They like being a part of something. This isn't an exception but rather an addition to the other sports that our youth have to choose from - participation is 99% of the battle. Adapt.

The FIFA World Cup rolls around every FOUR years.... get over the pain of having to push an extra button on the remote to surf through... While I may be part of the minority here at the site, you are a minority in the grand scheme of the world's stage... a vast minority. The US's win over Latvia yesterday was a solid showing that we're showing up to play and to win....

Further, the US side is ranked higher this year than any other year in the past. While you may not enjoy watching it nor want to watch it, at least rally around your country much like you would for an Olympic sport... oh, wait a minute, soccer is an Olympic sport -- one of the oldest team sports. Bad example I suppose... but, I think you see my point.

The World Cup may interrupt your regularly scheduled programming but, just this once, give it a little try and a fair shake... the US is part of a very tough Group E to start off. The US kicks off on June 10th versus the Czech Republic which will be tough. Rather than spending your energy on "hating" it, use just a little to support your country. This *IS* a big deal -- always has been... always will be. Adapt...

I think that title belongs to lacrosse.

"Eckserent!'

Soccer is popular because ANYONE can play it. Even the guy that takes an "F" in Gym; because, he's afraid to be seen naked in the locker room.

Ehh... I don't agree... not by a long shot in fact. Show me numbers of youth participating in lacrosse... Until then, I just don't buy it.

And, frankly, that episode of King of the Hill was the worst that they've ever put together... stupidity breeds stupidity. It's pretty simple really.
