I hate soccer.

Storytime. In football when I was in HS, every off season we had games. We kept to our positions as a group and competed at certain track distances, receiving drills, etc. One game had us throw the football down the sideline for distance and the distance off the sideline was subtracted from the length of the throw. I was in the lineman group and out-threw the whole team, 70 yards as a junior dead on the sideline, not because I was a QB, because I threw to the tree, BB hoop, fence, anything at home and I got good at it. I didn't start playing football until I was a freshman. Now could any football goon play soccer and letter 3 years, no.
I can pick up a bat and smash a baseball, switch hit as I'm ampidextrous, not a 90+mpg heater, but I can do it. Now I can pitch, but haven't developed the mechanics to throw a high MPH. But I can still do it. Never even played while a kid.
I can go on and on, but I still know soccer isn't a game that anyone can just go out and play without knowing what they're doing. Too much going on.

Again. Im not talking about varsity letters and competitive sports.
Im talking about why it is a popular choice for small children and their parents. Anyone can play reasonably well without much work or ability. Does that mean they will go All-American? God no. It means that 6 year old Johnny will be able to kick the ball and run at the same time after one hour of playing. He wont know plays, strategies, formations, proper marking, how to head the ball well, or any of that crap...but he will be able to move the ball from one end to the other and kick it towards the goal. THATS IT! That and the fact that its a cheap sport is why it is so popular.
No one can just go out and play any sport competitively without any practice or training. To think otherwise is moronic. Congratulations on your athletic achievements, but I was not talking about adults or even high schoolers...I am talking about the young children, where the growth of the game begins.

There ya go!
Odin -- you're reading WAY too much into my commentation. I stand by my saying of 'stupidity breeds stupidity' (always have, not sure I'll ever change on that) but, your comment about showering and your notion that 'anyone' can play it (in the connotation that you brought it) was, indeed, stupid. It's that simple.
If I had the desire or lack of education to call you stupid or a moron, I would've done it outright and not beat around the bush. Trust me on that one.

I respect soccer players. Takes of lot of endurance to do what they do.
It just isn't for me though
(after all, this is the sport where one man acutually bit another man in the *********.. ouch
)
I swear this isn't a dig at soccer, but the guys comment is priceless and totally bizarre.
Im glad I wasn't on the other friendly end of this one...
Friendly Genital Bite Raises Eyebrows in Soccer Circles
Francisco Gallardo, a professional soccer player, has become the focus of a Spanish sports scandal after biting a teammate's genitals while celebrating a goal. Gallardo says, "It was something between friends that I thought would have no importance, until this morning when I got up and saw all the commotion in the news." Spain's soccer federation may suspend Gallardo for violating rules concerning "sporting decorum."

I like soccer
I grew up in Europe and I like soccer and rugby.
When I came to the US, I was not very interested in the NFL but I started to watch and it can be interesting. It is very tactical but the only thing the plays are short compare to rugby. If I was to choose between rugby and football, I would still like rugby better. More action and continuous play.
Anyway, the sport you like really depends on where you were born.

No, it's not that simple; but, I'm not arguing it any further. I'm just glad it's out in the open. I've felt a chill coming from your direction for a while. Not sure what the deal is; but, I'm cool with it. It's really no big deal.

Go back and read my original post; but, this time, just pretend (I know it's a real stretch; but, humor me.) that I was actually trying to be humorous. I really don't like soccer much; but, do not begrudge anyone their opinion on the sport. This has been one of the most subjective arguments/discussions ever on this site. Does anyone here actually think there is a correct side of this to be on? Don't be so sensitive next time. I can't believe that after all the time I've spent on this site, that some of you still haven't figured out that I'm rarely serious about anything... aside from politics. Not even that all the time.
BTW, I don't think I've said anything particularly inaccurate. I just didn't think I needed to explain things the way AAlmeter did. (There's no shock value in that anyway.
) He and I are basically on the same page on this.

I suppose I am one of the many excellent soccer players born in Tennessee....?
