b-4 putting the bumpers on
tape some fender covers to the fenders where the bumper "wraps around"
one false move and the bumper will waste the paint job there...
and as my body man said while we were putting the car on the ramp truck..
"you hurt my paint job i hunt you down like dog"

GT wheels? i hope?

if you need any parts..let me know
ya never know whats in the barn down louies..

Yes, GT Wheels.

Thanks for all the advice. This is the 13th mustang, and 7th 1969 Mach restoration our family has done, so there shouldn't be any surprises. There's a couple great parts houses in Denver, and I've got a small stockpile of extra's myself. In fact, I've got an original 428 Shaker Hood scoop assembly that came off another wrecked Mach about 25 years ago that's in excellent shape, and alot of people would like to trade me some other parts for it.

Thanks again.

I'm actually about to start searching for another Mach soon. This time, I'm going to find just a nice plain one with a 351, and customize it for myself to drive everyday if I want, and not worry about it. I don't want anymore garage/trailer queens.

Just out of curiosity, how much rust would make a 67 unsuitable for restoration?

fastback? Some people will go crazy for these fastbacks even with a lot of rust. Any amount of rust is still restorable. It just depends on how much work you put into it and how much you are willing to spend.

If it's got a straight frame in one piece, it's restorable.

1969Mach...

A buddy of mine in highschool had a 69 Mach 1, 429 CJ, 4 spd. that was the car we all tried to beat.

80mph in 4th gear, romp on it and it would break both rear tires free and lay double black marks untill you let up. Thats at an 80 mph start. It was insanely fast for a street car. I can't remember it's track times now, it's been a few years and wasn't mine.

I'm not sure exactly how I'd answer that.

The main area of concern on a fastback, at least what I look at, is the top areas. I "feel" the roof, the contours from the rear of the roof down to the "top" of the rear quarter panels. If I can't push it in, and it doesn't flake anywhere, then the car would be considered. A magnet helps find bondo through any paint. However, if the car is worth it to you, and you have the finances, there are some real body magicians out there that can work miracles.

As far as the rest of the car, there are lots of aftermarket quarters, and door skins, and deck lids. What I would do is find someone in your area that does soda blasting. It removes anything without heating up the metal, and keeps the thinner areas from warping. It's expensive, but it does the best metal prep with the least amount of destruction. You don't even have to pull the glass if you don't want too.

Mustangs are expensive to restore though. 69s and 70s are the worst. If you're doing a 67, and if it's a fastback, it would be worth it in my opinion. If it's a coupe, then I'd only do it if the car has personal worth. It's hard to get the money back on a coupe unless it originally had a 390 V8 or special option.

The more I think about doing another one, the more I lean towards just biting the bullet and buying a new 2006. All the power and feel of the 60's, and MUCH more comfortable with better tunes and handling! (I know, I know. Blasphemy. But man, I love em.) I'd like to get the V6 version of the 2006, and start seeing how much those motors can be tweaked when the aftermarket blowers start hitting the shops.

Well, this particular one is sitting in a storage unit at work, the owner hasn't been seen for almost a year, no forwarding address etc. I haven't crawled around it too much yet but it looks to be all original, including bias ply tires. I can see some rust around rockers and wheel openings, don't know about the frame. The seats are there, all the glass etc.

I can basically have it for nothing, I'd have to get a bonded title, but in reality, under Iowa law the owner or his estate could never come back on me except for the bond which is a one time fee. It's not like they could take the car after I restored it.

I'd much rather have a Mach 1, when I was a kid I used to draw those things on every page of my notebook in school.

I'd grab it. In fact, you say the word, and I'll be there with my trailer tomorrow!

About 180 miles.

But the car is in Denver now for awhile. My dad and one of my brothers are finishing it because they have much more free time than I right now.
