I was having the same thoughts... maybe rockfish is a cousin of the striped bass?
EDIT:
after further review the Rockfish is the state fish of Maryland. It is also known as a striped bass.
Here is a pic I found that "describes" them??

same thing as a striped bass... in late winter mature rockfish begin to move from the ocean into tidal freshwater to spawn. spawning is triggered by an increase in water temperature in april in the chesapeake bay. so the season opens after a good bit have spawned so the population stays up.

Them's Rock Fish, or striped bass if you want to get particular. ******** down here in VA call em 'Stripers'. Whenever I see 'Stripers' I get visions of brass
poles, loud muzak and beer.
I don't know if you're old enough to remember but I remember when they imposed a 5 year moratorium on them. 100% catch and release or you lost your boat, truck, trailer, gear, and then got a $5,000 fine on top of it.
In Alaska if you bring the Rockfish up to quick from the bottom... you implode the suckers. The guts are hanging outside of the fish by the time they are at the waters surface. Makes for an interesting find.
At leaste it seams they were calling them "Rockfish"... but they were Orange.
