I broke my hand when I was about thirteen. It was on a Friday night, went to the ER Saturday, and didn't have the bones set till Tuesday. It hurt like hell when he set them but I lived to tell about it. I would give it a couple-few days and see how it feels unless you like going to the doctor...

I've been sitting here with my hand in this pot full of ice cold water for a while now. But, my mom wants to get it checked out tomorrow. .

Depends. If the jam nut is locked in, they will likely have to torch it...that hurts. If its pretty free, it ain't that bad.

I broke that wrist (the left one) twice. The first time when I was around 8. I didn't find out about it until I went in for x-rays after I had broken it again at 16 playing football.

After a week or so of pain, I went to see the trainer. He figured a bone was dislocated so every day before and after practice and games he would try to pop it into place. That hurt a bit, but not bad. When they finally fixed it in surgery, I was out cold, so I couldnt tell you how bad it felt.

I've broken a lot of bones, and without an x-ray or a really bright light, I've found that the best way to determine whether or not something is broken is by the way the pain progresses. If it gets better in the next 3 days, you're fine. If the pain gets worse, its broken. Thats just my experience though....no doctor here.

Good luck.

Even if it does'nt hurt. Tell the doctor that it does. Get some pain meds for when you actually do hurt yourself. Or, by the looks of your hand, you may want to give offer the dude you creamed some of the pain meds.

but on the more serious side

pain meds are good after you get it checked out..but even after??

when i dislocated my shoulder i did'nt take any meds prescribed to me

i wanted to know what hurt and what did'nt...

pain meds numb it out... granted... but how do you know if your doing MORE damage after the fact if you cant feel it in the first place?

i let my shoulder "tell me" whats good and whats not by the feeling.. because i could feel it in the first place...sucked but i think it helped in the long run

you'll be ok if you follow what your hand tells you what works and what dont...

yeah i know this bites
but its the best thingto feel whats going on...not to numb it all away

tough guy

Ahh dislocated shoulders..hmm..gotta love em. Had my second one playing in a football game..sacking the quarterback. Yep, that hurt. Surgery soon after. The surgery and therapy was much worse than dislocating it. Of course i had all the adrenalin to go with it and i wanted to go back in the game but coach wouldnt let me...wonder why...

Some decent advice above. One way I always check is to pull slightly on the suspect finger(s). If you sudenly find yourself on the ceiling, it's broken.

When I am doing it on someone else, I always look out for the other hand.

Note to KC-10, re. weapons of choice: I like a palm heel too.

I was going to advise you to use the heel of your hand next time, but i see someone already has. Now i guess we have a Jamzwayne (parked too close on a parking lot)and a Thumper(messed with GF).

Boxers fracture here too. The doctor said I may need a pin if it didn't set right. I can still feel where I broke it. I have broken like four knuckles and 3 fingers and my hand and base of my wrist. I have always been able to move my fingers before I ever went to the doc. Just FYI.

I don't mean any disrespect to anyone here but most of this advise is wrong. As an x-ray tech I've seen my fair share of broken bones. Just saturday, I had a kid in the ER who's forearm was bent in 3 places. He said it didn't really hurt, and he could still move his hand. I had a guy a few years ago who's hand got shut in a tank hatch, 36 fractures in one hand and he could still move his fingers. The bottom line is, there are only 2 ways to know if you broke something. The first is a bone sticking out of the skin, the other is an x-ray. Just make sure you get it checked out.

Just an FYI: I cracked my hand like described earlier (the picture with the lines on it) punching a punk in the face once. Hurt like hell when I did it but I had full movement of my hand. The pain subsided but Xrays showed the fracture. Was in a cast for six weeks I think.
