USB Question for IT folks....

Ok....I just purchased a USB 2.0 card for my computer so that I can transfer data from the new digicam I bought (JVC Everio 30GB)....

...now I am having some issue with all my USB devices since I installed the PCI card....whenever I "Plug n' Play" a device into the card....it shuts all my other USB devices off....whether they are plugged into the card as well or into one of the on-board plugs.....

....any ideas on what might be the problem or what steps I should take to trouble shoot this issue?

I am no pro...but....

I would uninstall the card, and then re-install it. Also, see if you can find any updated drivers as well....if you haven't already don't that. If you have, I am in NO WAY, questioning your intelligence.

Well.....windows did not ask for any drivers....it just used the default ones....

Check the IRQs for all of the USB (Onboard and card)... That's about all I got.

WINXP?

Try to update the drivers with the ones that came with the hardware. XP has a nice drivers data base (I guess that's waht it's called), but it's not always up to date.

Give that a shot.

I did not think there were IRQ issues with XP anymore....last I had to deal with those were NT and a little in 200pro.....

Try this at your own risk, but I have done this on two differnet computers (both XP SP2) to fix weird USB problems. And it worked both times. But, these machines were not having the same symptoms you are describing.

Make sure all the USB devices are physically connected. Go into Device Manager and uninstall everything under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then reboot the machine.

Although, before doing that, I would definitely try an updated driver for the PCI card, first.

HOLY SCHITT!!!! I have been using WinXPpro since the early RC days....and I just experienced my FIRST "blue screen of death" in WinXPpro:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity check/memory parity error

*** The system has halted ***

....here is what I did....

I installed the drivers for the specific card off of the manufactures site....Device Manager then recognized the card as a single "hub" instead of 4 individual ports.....upon recognition, my keyboard (which was plugged into the card) stopped working.....so I unplugged it and plugged it back into the motherboard so I could finish the dialog boxes.....after it was all said and done, I rebooted and prior to "shut down" I got the BSD......I recieve the BSD each and every time I reboot....and now certain devices will not work in the card....yet some do.....

safe mode and do what NW suggested...unplug everything USB related and reboot. When it comes back up...one at a time plug them in.

Damn dude.

I have seen that screen twice, and it really pisses me off too.

I would remove the new hardware, get the system back in operating condition. Boot into safe mode and do what Net Wurker posted...He and vader are pretty good with stuff like this...

[EDIT]

See, vader beat me to it.

I've been fighting a Windows 2003 Domain controller that doesnt want to accept a new SCSI card and Ultrium drive. Freaking Bluescreened 4 times already. Of course this keyed me to a problem with my DHCP server and how it was giving out a bogus backup DNS server because all my users lost Internet access when my DC/DNS server went down.

Its been a fun day.

And once you got the system back up, plug the USB card into a different PCI slot. Different slots use different system resources and cards can conflict.

Well....I kinda did what NW suggested....I plugged in a PS/2 mouse so I could work....then I uninstalled all but three USB controllers (three would not go away).....then I rebooted....so far no issues....

...I ordered a new ATA PCI controller for my new harddrive (my motherboard only has one ATA connection then 4 connection that I have never seen before....one of which is being used by my current HDD)......so when that arrives tomorrow, I will remove the fax/modem that I never use and move the USB card to that slot and place the controller card in another slot....

....all I know is that this USB thing has been driving me nuts today....
