Yeah, they are expanding their capacity for HD. They are going to carry all the local HD channels in the larger markets and more HD movie and PPV channels.

They are also switching over to MPEG-4 . . . which of course will mean everyone is going to have to get new equipment!!!!!

I hope they are not going to make me pay for it or someone at DirecTV is gonna have an HD box up their ***.

Oh God. I'm old.

Crap!

It was 1996 for us.

Ozark Mountain news, April 14th 1996:
Hillbilles recive the first color tele vision broadcast but can only be recieved on one of them thar fancy color Tele sets. It is predicted that this will be the most popular craze in hillbilly entertainment since HeHa or the Grand 'Ol Opry. It is estimated that by 2002 90% of Ozark homes will have a color tele set. The other 10% might have electricity!

1951, Dr. Peter Goldmark had developed a mechanical method for producing color TV...
Yea that'd make you pretty old.

It's right after Mpeg-3!

Mpeg stands for "Moving Picture Experts Group"

The 4 is the 5th version of the format/cpmpresion that they use.
Similar to other software, as they improve they have different version names.

The first one was just Mpeg. Then came Mpeg1, Mpeg2, etc....

Evidently, you hicks go backward in time . . .

Edited to clarify . . . firt regular series to start in color was the Monkees . . .

also, the show that helped sell more color TVs than any other . . .Batman.

But no, the first ever color show was not the Monkees . . .

It's "one more" than MPEG-3. Just like the amp that goes to 11.

second satellite dish for locals on directv. That's unheard of for here. The only second dish I ever installed here was for dish network to pick up one local channel.

Your HD boxes come with a second tuner designed to receive your hd of air. This is where alot of people are scammed (or maybe misled) right off the bat. ALot of people don't know that a pair of $7 rabbit ears will work. Most who are somewhat close to the city only need to purchase this. In my experience I would say probably 8 out of 10 customers I have installed have worked with the cheapest set of rabbit ears that we threw behind there t.v. It has been mroe of a special case for customers needing a roof mounted or exterior mounted antenna.

With all this said soon Dish Network is hoping to have the locals broadcasted over there dish so there will be no need for this. For the time being the best advice I can give is when attempting to get locals in HD off air, start with the smallest and cheapest antenna you can find then work your way up.

Most of the time it's not bad, but if we hear rain/drizzle or wind outside, then there is a 60% or better chance that we will lose signal.

That is the only reason that we had ever thought about switching before.
We have contacted DN and DTV both and DTV had a cheaper up front cost to get 3 more rooms and DVR and was an 18 month contract. Package cost was $5 less with DTV too, but will raise my phone bill $5 for the multi service discount I get from the local sprint for having dishnetork. VS DN with a higher upfront cost and 2 year contract to upgrade. I've been a customer for 3 years.

Only down side that I've found with DTV (Besides the NFL you mentioned earlier, becasue I hate watching football, baseball, basketball, golf, bowling. Basically anything with *****.) But the only other thing is that I understand with DTV you have to have a seperate dish to get local channels. I don't want a second dish on my roof. The first is enough of an eye sore, but a necessary evil that I'm willing to trade some cosmetics for the entertainment.
I'm confused in who's customer you are? Dish Or Directv.

OK, typically when it takes basically nothing for your signal to go out it can only be a couple things really.

For the most part it is usually a signal reception of the dish. IF you can finagle your way to the signal meter screen look to see what kind of signal strenght you have. It takes about a 60-70 to receive your channels. What happens is sometimes from a storm or improper installation your signal will hover, say right at 75. The SLIGHTEST interference such as a small cloud mass or 2 mile an hour wind may affect the dish knocking your signal very quiclkly say to 55 therefore knocking your picture out.

The stronger your signal is getting off the dish the MORE it will take to knock your picture out. Visa versa.

So if you can clarify what company you are with and if you were able to see what your signal strength is.

I'm dishnetwork, thinking about changing... Right now I do get local channels and only one dish thru dishnetwork. But if I change to direct, then I can not. I will have to get the second dish for my local news. Before we had satellite, because I live an hour drive from the city where the stations are broadcast from and I live in a basement home, then we have to use arieal mount antennas to receive the local free channels over air. The only way I got them all 1/2 way clear was a $50 boom arieal, mounted on a 30' pole.

My signal

What do I need to do?
Was professionally installed with a roof mount arm on east side of the house.

I would like to upgrade to 4 rooms and 1 DVR reciever but do not want to sign another contract. Wish they'd sell it resoanbly.
I believe the message that I usually get is something about lost transponder. I'll write it down and try to get back in the signal test next time it goes out.
So whats the other thing that I might could check for preventive measures?
