They came out with a HD DVR (Tivo) and the wife would love it but they want at least $300 with a $200 rebate. I found out that there are new satellites for the new MPEG-4 HD. When this is available for everyone, I will need another new receiver. I am going to wait until I see where all of this ends up. I have also read that they are going to start leasing equipment like cable companies.

Next month we are supposed to get our local in Orlando in HD through the satellite so I will not need my off-air antenna.

I considered going to cable because the equipment is less and they offer more HD channels but a salesman talked me out of it. The non-HD channels on DirecTV are still 4:3 ratio but at least they are all digital. On cable only some of the non-HD channels are digital. All of the rest are analog and he said that they look so bad on a 50” tv that you will not even want to watch them.

I have my internet service through the cable company. I looked at DirectWay (DirecTV’s internet service) but decided against it because of one main reason. Any uploads are still through your phone line. A satellite is only 1-way communication. You can not send data back to a satellite.

uploads on phone line via directway is old school. Starband is a competitor of directway and in my opinion works a little better. It IS a two-way satellite. So your uploads are on your dish. Still a little slow compared to a dsl or cable modem but not too bad if your not a heavy uploader( which most of us forum junkies are )
If your in the boonies and can't get nothing BUT satellite internet and can afford the upfront cost for equipment. GO ahead and do it. (can be a write-off too if you use it properly ) Downloads and viewing pages are a helllll of alot better than dial-up

However satellite vs cable. Satellite wins all day long. I would never make the switch. I mean come on. If hurricane katrina were to come through your neighborhood and kill the power your cable would be gone. However good ole johnny boy fires up his generator and BOOM he's sitting down watching the 10 o'clock news drikning a cold one . Of course he may have no roof but at least he is being entertained. hehe ( i don't think that sales pitch has ever worked, but hey you never know. lol)

To back up my "comcast...sucks"comment. 2 things...when I got it, they had some deal going on and said they would buy all my D/TV equipment for $400. It was to be credited to my bill in $50 increments each month. Long story short...that never happened, everytime I called they said just deduct it from the bill and we will take care of it. I kept getting late fees which I had to call and fight over everymonth. Then..the signal was crappy and I had lines in the picture all the time. They came out to look at it and said that the power in my house is bad and thats what was causing it....I canceled it the next day and went back to D/TV. I'm just saying, I had a bad experience with them and will never deal with them again, unless I am forced to.

Oh yeh..Kindle does suck..you seen my reasoning on that

I'll leave the smoking one alone....

And don't even get me started on the shoobies

Well I'm definitely sold on Direct TV. I just got off the phone with Verizon and they DO NOT have DSL in my area. I don't know what to do now. I can't go back to dial-up. I guess I could keep Comcast internet and drop the TV portion but that kinda defeats the purpose. I don't know what I'm gonna do now.

Thanks WMR and thanks for the headsup 04Nick.

any particluar reason you went with Directv? I actually have cable internet here only and satellite. still save money It's pretty common too.

Are you going through a local retailer or did you call directv direct?

I haven't gone yet. I pay $135 a month for Comcast cable TV and internet. Comcast just removed 13 of my movie channels which is half of them. They are not lowering my rate. Their attitude is go to the competition. I started with Comcast when they were $18 a month. Right now my cable bill is higher than my electric and phone combined.

I also wanna go to Direct TV because the consensus on here seems to be overwhelmingly for DT.

I could change that

I don't know how to go about this. Really not biased towards either one. I actually have directv here at my house, really because It's my roomates place and he wanted the NFL ticket so installed it for him a few years back.

Really what Directv lacks is product support. After one year your paying out of pocket for whatever may go wrong. Dish Network however with there lease program warranties all of your equipment. It is actually very easy to set-up replacement parts to be shipped to you via ups. Also after one year Dish Network is the only one that has upgrades available at extreme discounted prices of actual product retail. Benefiting customers from keeping there service. Unless your crazy about the nfl ticket you may want to give dish network a closer look. I think you'll end up happier especially if something were to ever go wrong or a new product comes out in a year that you really want and can pay $50 vs $500. That's a real number comparison too.

I was under the impression by what I read on here that D/T will upgrade your equipment when the contract is up and the payments stay the same. It sounded like it works like cellphone service.

I called Verizon and not only did they say it's not in my area but that there are only a few places that have it. Guess I'll have to put on my Verizon uniform and go snoopin around your house. Think anyone will notice 20 miles of phone line laying on the ground going north?
