Buck...I am truely sorry for your loss. I have total respect for you and what you did to try to help your friend. Its unfortunate that he didnt see you were trying to help him. If a person does not want to change, they are not going to. Dont beat yourself up over this and feel you "failed" him or didnt do enough. You did more than most people would have. Your are the type of friend I would love to have.

Hey Jim. My heart goes out to you man. I know where you are coming from. I am presently mentoring an alcoholic, and have been working with him for a year yesterday. It was his first anniversary of sobriety. and it has been a terrible battle for him. I thank God for the help He's given me to be able to help my friend. I realize that there are just some people who have had a lot of bad stuff happen in their lives and have no hope left.
Jim, please don't think that you let your friend down in the slightest way. I'm sure that he had very lucid moments, possibly while you weren't there, during which he realized that you were indeed a true friend, but he was so worn out with this battle that he couldn't help himself. But now he has no more pain and suffering.
I would be proud to say you were my friend.
Bless you and bless your friend's soul. Now he can rest in peace.

Buck, I'm really sad to hear this. You went above and beyond to try and help. Grieve your friends loss but know that you did try and save him. There's nothing for you to be upset with yourself about. You didn't fail anyone.

I only hope that I can be as strong as you if I ever have to deal with something like this. Take care of yourself.

We'll keep you in our prayers, hang in there and don't beat yourself up too bad. You put forth more effort than most other people would have even thought about. Death is no easy thing, whether we chose our way to die or not, we all must go through it some day.

Thanks everyone i appreciate all your thoughts. The report after autopsy was that he had over 510 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood thus causing death due to respiratory depression (heart failure i guessed). Man if you guys know anyone fighting this battle please try and help them. Its an evil evil addiction and i was way to blind to see its full devestation until it was to late. Tuff was so right on the money when he told me what to expect but i remained blind.. Now friday morning i will help carry him one more time to his grave where he will rest in peace forever. While i have never been against drinkng as a social thing, as a sport, hobby, crutch it really sucks big time. I won't go into a rant here but everyone take care out there. It really sucks to be friends for over 40 years, go to war together, get married in the same year, live the good life, the bad times and the good and now this, it just really blows...

Jim

I just saw this thread for the first time and I just wanted to say a couple things. You did an amazing thing for your friend, you truly are a great person. Secondly, I'm sorry about your loss. I can only imagine how hard it must be for you.

I just also read this thread. In my experiences sorry is not always appropriate. All I will add, is your buddy has a new start.
Perhaps your efforts and compassion were not in vain.

Regards
Russ

Jim, I'm so sorry for the loss of a dear friend. I know you feel like you failed him in some way but I also know you did everything in your power to help him. Know that he is at peace now and whatever demons caused his excessive alcohol intake will never touch him again.

Rest in eternal peace. . .
