I need some opinions

A buddy at work is offering me his 1986 Ford F150 for 400 dollars. It has 150,000 some miles on it. It is a two wheel drive, the interior is in perfect shape, which is great, because I hate working on interior. The exterior has wear and tear, but I plan for this to be a winter truck for this year, then a project truck starting in the spring. Also, it needs new piston rings, it drives, but it really takes the oil, but I plan on either getting it rebuilt, or buying a crate engine next year. So do you think I should take the dive? I really want to do all the work on this truck my self, esp the body work, like removing rust, and fixing dents and what not.

So what do you all think? Think I should take the plunge?

What size motor,6 or 8? The 6 would be easier to rebuild. I believe this is the last year for carburator also.

For $400 you're not gonna be out much if it's a bigger POS than you're prepared for. I sold my 83 chevy that sounds like it was in similar condition. The thing ran for quite a while for the guy I sold it too. It was one of those "top off the oil and check the gas once in a while" rigs. I remember he loaned it to me after he bought it to tow a horse trailer. One the way out to the house the oil light came on and I had to dump 4 quarts into the thing.

Sounds like a good deal to me. We've bought dozens of beatermobiles for between $400 and $600, always gotten our money out of them and the best part...if it turns out to be a real lemon, you're only out $400 instead of $4000!

But would it be worth to rebuild everything, and just make it a car show truck? I really have some big plans for it.

That is a highly subjective question. There is no right or wrong answer even if we could inspect the truck in person. "Would it be worth it" is entirely up to you. No one here can answer that question for you.
