Smile Cubmobiles and youth

Have any of you when you were younger (young enough to be cub scouts), had a cubmobile? I had a really nice one that a friend of mine built when I was a Cub Scout. It looked like a classic car with a full body and a fancy steering system (steering wheel and column with cables doing the actual steering part when you turned the wheel). It also had a detailed grille with inserts and details carved into the body. It was painted black with a white hood and grille. It also had a place where the person pushing it could ride and a bar for which he or she could push. It had the best wheels on it and a great braking system. I was just wondering if any of you had anything similar to this or if any of you had built anything like this for your children. It would be neat to see if anybody else had the privilege of playing with one of these as a child.

Would you also call that a "Soap Box Derby" car? If so, do I have a story for you.

Well, if its a soap box derby car, I gotta tell you...I hate those things. I was almost killed by one when I was just a kid. They were having the race in town, so my parents packed us all up and headed down to check it out. Being the 7 year old that I was, I wasn't much into staring at the top of the hill just waiting for the cars to come rolling down. Therefore I had my back to the road and was playing in the dirt. Next thing I know, i'm waking up in the hospital. The "GIRL" who was driving the car had a small head.( something you dont see every day) Anyway, since her head was so small, her helmet didnt fit right and kept falling down over her eyes. In case you dont know what these cars are like..its a small go kart kinda thing that goes downhill only. You need to be shoe-horned into them(kinda like D' in the focus) and cant move once your in. Your arms are tucked in, underneath and all you can do is steer. So of course halfway down the hill, her helmet falls down over her eyes, she veeres off the side of the road, and I was so nice to come between her and the nice shiny guard rail. As the car was veering off the road towards me, everyone ran away. My mom pushed the carriage with my little bro in it and tried to grab me at the same time. My arm slipped out of her hand and before she knew it, I was smashed into the guardrail, knocked out cold with blood pouring out of my head. Paramedics came and took me to the hospital. I got a bunch of stitches in my head and was bruised up pretty bad but I survived. The doctors said that if I was turned around watching the race, I most likely would've died. They said I would've seen it coming and tensed up my body, which would've caused a lot more damage. Since I wasnt looking, my body was limp at the time of impact. They said thats what saved me. I did however make the front page of the local newspaper, meet the whack a$$ girl that was driving the car and got her helmet and a T-shirt...LOL...If that was today, I'de be a very rich man.

And that my friends is why I dont like them damn soap box derby cars.

Phew, you had me worried for a second. I thought you were going to die as a young Brew. But if you didn't survive then I was going to ask who the hell was typing that????

Those were pretty sweet, sheet lead along the bottom and powdered graphite will make those run like greased lightning. Oh yeah, can't forget to gently sand the burrs off the plastic wheels.

Great! I just volunteered last week to be Tiger Cub Den Leader for our son's Den.

Anyone know how to build a catapult? The pack's Catapult Challenge is coming up in 6 weeks and each den needs to build one....must fit into a 3'x3'x3' box, no more than 3 bungee cords/silicon tubes and ammo will be navel oranges.

I must be nuts...

My mom still has my old PW derby car. We retired it after 4 seasons of wins. We'd give it a new paint scheme every year add some graphits to the axles and keep racing it. I remembr it like it was yesterday. Dad was working second shift so I stayed up waiting for him to get home to help me work on it. We spent 2 or three hours working on it that night. Then raced it teh next day! We shaped it low and put a really smooth finish on the paint, 1000 grit sandpaper I believe, to reduce wind resitance. Then added 2, 3/8 bolts i nthe top about 1/3 the length from the front to help hold the front down and give it more wieght as it went down the hill. No one could catch that thing.

Has anyone ever done a Co2 car from balsam (sp?) wood?
9th grade Power and forces class was got to build one. I missed the day of the race so one of my frinds ran mine for me. I got to see the video of it. We watched it in class and it too waxed everyone. BUT on the very last race for the championship my car waxed the runner up but just as it hit the foam penuts at the end of the track that stopped them... it shattered in 1/2. So I was disqualified and slow poke won the races. That's when they brought the remains of my car to me in a hankerchief. The assignment was ot make them fast and strong, guess I forgot the strong part because I made the section between the wheels about the size of a #2 pencil. If only one less person would have been in that class I would have brought home the glory because I wouldnt have had to of ran that last fateful race.
