Her mother called me, I called the Sheriff and went next door with my shotgun. Soon as I rounded the corner, I didn't even have to bring the barrel up, he beat tracks to his car and squalled tires out the driveway. The Sheriff caught up with him later and he spent like a year in jail I think.
Outstanding Quintin. I have a new respect for you.
First off in the instance where an intruder is in your house and you feel the need to use DEADLY force recoil will not be an issue. You (or your wife) will be so scared and hyped up you wont fill a thing. The down side of a pistol for home security is you have to be some what familiar with it to be able to use it in a tight. Remember you or your wife will be on the verge of panic and will most likely pull and fire. With it being dark most likely that will only make it that much harder to hit what your shooting at...and make no mistake if you pull a gun you better fire it, and if you fire it you better be shooting to kill.
With that said whats the best choice for a "bedroom" gun? A revolver is simple to use...pull the trigger and it shoots. Anybody can do that in a panic. I certainly wouldnt go over a .357 though...no need for more than that in a self defense close quarters environment. Down side to a revolver is 6 shots...in a panic 6 shots could last 3 seconds and you (or again your wife) could miss all 6 times and that wouldnt be good. Another bad thing is bullet penatration...a .357 will go through sheet rock like it was nothing and you could hit a family memeber on the other side be accident.
A semi auto IMO is a better choice than revolver because they offer more shots. Most 9mms are 17 shots or more...if you cant at least wound somebody with 17 shots somthings wrong. They arent really any more complicated to shoot than a revolver (just make sure you get a double action). The down side is you still have to be able to hit somebody with it.
The best choice IMO is a shotgun. Intimidation aside (I am not intimidating anybody....if you ever see me pull a gun on you you are shot...period), a shotgun is the choice for close quarters panic shooting. Each shot puts about 9 30cal projectiles in the air..so all you have to do is point and shoot. My wife can shoot just about anything and is not intimidated by it but in some cases where you may worry the your wife would be teach her to use the shotty using birdshot. It has very low recoil and is easy to hit something with. This will give her all the confidence she needs to use the gun in a tight..and in that situation a 3in 00 Buck wont phase her. I would recommend a semi auto over a pump though...the pumps are a lot harder for a woman to use. The only down side to the shot gun is its long and cant be wheeled around as easy as a pistol, but tell your wife if anybody ever grabs the barrel to keep her from pointing it to just squeeze the trigger!
The main thing to remember though is if you get a gun for self defense be ready and prepared to use it. If you think you or your wife couldnt pull the trigger than dont get one, because in that case the intruder will likely take it away from you and use it on you.
I have right at 50 long guns and 20 or so pistols but this is one of my favorite bedroom guns...a Benneli M1 Super 90 12GA.

Pre-fragmented rounds can also be bought that are designed to break apart upon impact and exert all energy in a very short span. These rounds aren't suppose to go through drywall, but penetrating thick/heavy coats can be a problem.

But, a .357 and even that shotgun will rip through sheetrock like nothing is there. Shotguns have horrible over penetration through normal building material.
Also, at close quarter ranges, a shotgun is NOT a point in the general direction and shoot weapon. I've seen some photos from an FBI lab and it takes over a yard most of the time for the sabot part of the round to even start to seperate from the pellets. You're still looking at a pretty tight group at the CQB ranges. Most of that type of shooting will be 7 to 14 feet!
The advantage of a shotgun over a handgun though is you have another point to help steady the gun (the buttstock) and you also have a longer sight radius. I've also done some reading about what actually goes through people's minds during a gun fight (it was police officeres rethinking events) and the only ones that remembered using their sights used rifles or shotguns. It is just so natural once you've had practice to shoulder the weapon, swing it up and get your check weld where you will easily be able to see your sights. In a low light condition, especially without night sights, you might not think about that with a handgun... And for those that have shot handguns a lot, just being a little off aim really throws the rounds far off.
