this is my home protection mossbeg 500 combat shotgun, my wife can fire it pretty easy with the shoulder stock down and birdshot and she is 5.2 and 120 pounds, just the sight of it or the sound of the shell going in the chamber should be enough to freiten all but the most intent of home intruders

To slow or stop an intruder then detour them. Take a 2x6 with 16 penny nails drove throu it, place it face up under each window and in front of each door before you go to bed or leave the house. Once the unsuspecting intruder which had now bvecome the victim steps on them. Then he wont be advancing very fast very hard except to get away from this.
Non gun home defense

You can tell when you touch off a full house .357 but for practice I run mostly .38 specials through it. It's like a pop gun. Revolvers are dead simple and reliable (Taurus possibly accepted, I have no direct experience with them though).
Don't kid yourself - try something smaller than a 6" barrel and you will change your mind. I have a Taurus 617 .357, snub nose w/ ported barrel. Shooting .357s out of it gets old real quick. It has a substantial kick straight back (not up like a pistol). The thing is like a hand cannnon. Most people that have shot it have had enough after the first 7 rounds. Additionally, the noise from a .357 makes most people flinch as they are pulling the trigger. Whenever I shoot it, I double up on ear protection - disposables in the ears, and then mickey mouse ears. It makes a BIG difference.

Shooting .38s out of it is a different story - you can barely feel any kick.

Very true, but I was refering to the basic handling of a firearm to prevent neglient discharges - I hadn't got to the info about intentiallly discharging a firearm.

I dont know why no one has said anything about a tazer. I work in law enforcement and in my opinion the tazer is one of the best tools ever invented. The problem with old tazers is they worked on a 7-14 watt system, some people could fight this. New tazers are available in a 18-26 watt system. The civilian version shoots 15 feet and they even come with a laser so you cannot miss even in the dark. The gun runs on double a batteries and can be used over and over to keep someone
incapacitated. The tazer can also be used without firing the prongs. Alcohol and size will not stop a tazer, it works by interfering with signals to your nervous system and it causes all of the muscles in your body to contract over and over again, you freeze up and fall to the ground. I was working at a fair and a bull got loose. We tazered the bull and it took it to the ground. The problem with weapons and civilians is what happens after you shoot the intruder. If you think that someone is not going to sue you and take you to court you are mistaken. Everything about you and the firearm will come into play. They will want to know when you and where you bought the weapon, why did you choose that weapon, where did you by the ammo, what box of ammo did the rounds you shoot come from, why did you buy that ammo. What is your experience with firearms in a self defense situation. What experience do you have with identifying a threat at night. Did the intruder even have a weapon, if he did not you will probably be found guilty. I am not saying that I dont support peoples rights to own guns because I do, I own about 10 myself but I keep a tazer and a surefire flashlight in my night stand. To get a Tazer with a laser and four cartridges its about 600.00.

That works.

I didn't know rubber slugs were available to the general public. What about those lil "sandbags"?

Why? So you can get sued?

Not that I agree with it, but with the way people are sue happy and the jury of 12 sways; if you don't shoot to kill you shouldn't have shot then.

i dont know if some guy is coming at me with a knife and i shoot to kill i think i would be more likely to get sued then if i shot him with a rubber slug and called police, that is my call and i am stickin to it, now if he has a gun it is shoot to kill, lets put it this way if i am in fear of my life or my family, than shoot to kill, if i think i might just get hurt I.E. knife or fists than less lethal tactics will be used, i am pretty sure a jury will rule in my favor

or worse yet...
Better to be judgd by 12 than to have 6 carry your wife or kids.

It's kinda hard for a dead guy to sue...
As for the intruder not having a weapon, well the dead guy must have taken the steak knife from the kitchen - damn thief!

Any dead intruder in my house will have armed himself by the time the police arrive.

Here is a link from someone about rubber ammo.

My wife is still in the no gun thinking.

I am thinking 410 or 20G less kick.

Wow. Can't believe I missed all this until tonight. I've got 30+ years in Law Enforcement and Security and was a Firearms instructor for 19 of those years. Firearms usage is quite often a final, fatal, blow. Are you ready for that? Emotionally, psychologically, financially? Depends on where you live and the local views, it may be worth staying clear of guns. If OK, a good shotgun, or lighter caliber handgun does the trick. DO NOT load up with hot ammo for inside the home as you would for professional work on the street. There may be other loved ones nearby that you don't want taking a stray round. Especially true if you don't regularly train and use the weapon. A good dog is a very good investment as is pepper spray or its variants, as well as proper home security. Bad guys tend to like doing business in the quiet without being noticed. Lights and alarms, barking dogs, gun shots, scares all but the most determined away. They go to easier pickings somewhere else. Don't make it your place, no matter what you decide.
