looters
looters
So I'm flipping thru tv news channels, and stop on CNN . . .
And there on screen they are showing footage of people . . . a lot of people . . . looting stores. Not sure where it was, either New Orleans, or maybe Mississippi somewhere.
Entire families - adults and kids - shamelessly taking everything they could get their hands on and stuffing shopping carts and pick up trucks.
Now . . . I may be wrong here and taking it to the extreme . . . but I'd have no problem with the National Guard just shooting them all on sight - yup, even the spawn. Put a stop to that chit right away and prevent the little criminals from ever growing up into adult criminals.
No excuse for that crap.

Yeah; that was some bull***** right there...
They should just drop a 30 Kw diesel generator in that water (power running) and handle all of that...
I wonder what the kill radius would be....

Agreed, but that seems to be the mark of humans in situations like that. Some would die of starvation before stealing food, others get the mob mentality going and get worked into frenzies. I hope and pray for all affected in that area. Looters ought to be subject to a 'shoot on site' order.

how does the law apply to that situation. Say, a business owner is doing some clean-up work in his/her business. A family of 4 walks in and starts to steal stuff. He lets them get out the door, then a few shots later they are dead. Did he act within his rights as the law looks at it? Would any charges be filed against the man?

Now if you stood in the door and they tried to get through you then you would be in fear of your life and plug 'em.

In Texas, you can pop a cap in their butts- if they are actually in your house.
There is an urban legend that I don't know if it's true or not- but "they say" you can shoot a person on your property in Texas after dark (And only after dark) because they are considered trespassing... I would imagine if that were true your boundaries would have to be very clearly marked...
You can defend your property (car), but that gets kind of iffy because there was a man here circa 1998 that shot & killed 1 or 2 thugs that were trying to steal his rims and/or car. The argument was the car was an extension of his property and he had a right to defend it...
He went to trial- I don't remember if it was Civil or Criminal, either for wrongful death or murder.

In Louisiana- if you catch them climbing in your window; you can't shoot them. They have to be already in the house- then you can "pop a cap" in their butts. In Texas, you can pop them coming through the window (which would lend some credence to the "trespass" thing I mentioned above...
But, if I found myself with my gun in may hand and came face to face with a robber- I'd shoot first... Better to be judged by 12, than carried by 6.

One of my mother-in-law's friend's friend came home to find a robber in his hallway. He told the guy to freeze which he did. But, trying to be slick he turned the light off in the hallway. The man fired a warning shot into the floor to let the burgular know he meant business, and the burgular just happened to be there, trying to crawl past him and escape... At least, that's what he told them...
Well, he's in jail today for killing that burgular. The burgular was clearly on that man's property- clearly in his house- face to face with the owner...
Just so you'll know- most robberieis take place between 10:00 AM & 3:00 PM (Robbers don't want to encounter armed owners).. In Texas they've been doing "Home Invasion" styled robberies- coming in with a bunch of folks 3, 4 or 5 at a time. Pretending to be cops, and dressed like police. They've busted one or two rings, but every so often- it happens again...

Just to give you an idea how nuckin futs it is here . . .
We got a new police chief in Lost Angeles a while ago. When he came here, (and I'm not sure how this works, but) he was not rated - or approved - or not qualified - or whatever - to qualify as a "cop", therefore he couldn't carry a weapon. So he applied for a carry permit . . . and was denied.
In Lost Angeles County . . . actually, I think this is for the entire state of CA . . . until recently, over the past 20 yrs. or so, carry permits issued was ZERO . . . and still, the number is incredibly low . . . (except for a handful of celebs and those with political connections . . . but still it's an absurdly low number.)
Citizens here can not carry guns. Illegal alien gang members however have entire arsenals.
Don't know if any of you know or remember the big North Hollywood Bank Robbery a number of years back. It was just two guys and they held the entire police force at bay. They outgunned the police by a considerable margin . . . to the point that the LAPD had to go to two local gun shops to borrow guns that would at least be effective.
Gotta love Lost Angeles / California.

Wasn't that in the 1997/1998 time frame?

Agreed.
