You are missing out on the "REAL" deer my friend....I grew up in Arkansas and those deer are about the size of a large dog...

You need to go to a "corn state" such as Illinois, Nebraska, WI, etc....deer are much more rewarding in my opinion...

Your not lying there... The white tail in northern MO or southern Iowa are much much bigger plus have a much sweeter less gamey taste to the Venison! The drive to get there stinks... You can only look at so many miles of corn fields along each side of the road before you are wishing for a change in scenary. Living and growing up in Southern Missouri, we have two thing they don't up there... Hills and trees!

I moved to Southeast Virginia almost twenty years ago from W. Va. where there are many places to hunt. I finally got the opportunity a couple of years ago to deer hunt here and I have been enjoying it since. It is a different type of hunting here - some hunt with dogs and some don't. I have tried it both ways and they each have pros and cons. The end result though is being out there, having a good time, and sometimes coming home with some great experiences and really good venison.

I am not a hunter but I am looking for help from you hunters. We have been having black bear problems up here as of late and I would like to get a gun for emergencies. What type would you recommend? Also, would the same type of gun be good for stopping wild boar (have had at least 5 in a group a few times).

It thought you guys would be of better help than the guy at the gun shop.

Sometimes I have a hard time deciding what to do... breathe or hunt. Most of the times I pick hunting.

I hunt black bear, grizzly bear, moose, caribou, elk, deer, wolf, wolverine, and pretty much anything legal and in season. Here's a few pics from the last couple of years...

Hunting bear with a bow!?!? SOB!!!

I thought about it once... Decided I only needed 2 arrows and a friend.
One arrow to shoot.
Second arrow to stick in friends leg if I missed!
That way I knew I could out run him!

Bear hunting with a bow, man you have some stones. I just got back from an exotic bow hunt in Texas. I killed a Fallow deer and a Buffalo. Bow season starts in 3 weeks, after that rifle, and then on to ducks with a week of turkey inbetween. Of course, if a bear or hog makes the mistake of getting in range they will see the inside of my freezer. One word of caution, don't use a 7mm Mag on a squirrel. The results are instant splatter, with very little remainder. Here are a few pics of the buffalo.

Wookie, I've been putting in for a buffalo permit here in Alaska for years, but they are very difficult to draw. I'd love to get a chance at one. Congrats!

I can't find my picture of me at full draw on the grizzly I shot a few years back, but here is another blackie that I shot a couple years ago. The first chocolate bear was taken on the ground, this one was in a stand over some bait. Not nearly as much fun, but it was a good eating bear.

And here is a wolverine I plugged between the eyes. My taxidermist wasn't very happy with me when I sent it to him for a full body mount, he said it was a pain to skin with the damage to the skull.

If you guys have time to kill and want to see more pictures, I have a bunch up on my webshots account. Here's a link...

hunting pictures

We've got a moose hunt the last week of this month, a grizzly hunt the third week of October, an elk hunt in Washington at the end of October and more caribou hunting in November. I litterally hunt or trap every month of the year. Can't get enough of it!

Deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel. Taken them all by gun. Taken deer by bow, handgun, rifle, shotgun & muzzleloader. Broke in a new double barrel on Labor day on a squirrel hunt.

For Bear: I think you'd be OK with anything from a .270 and up. A .308 is a good compromise for kill power and Reasonable Kick back. 30-06 is about the upper range for kick-back and the price for ammo to practice with. Around these parts, bears are not very difficult to shoot down. take an old pair of jeans, get some use fryer fat from a fried chicken joint, melt the fat and soak the jeans in it. Tie the jeans up in a good knot around a tree. The bears really go for the fatty stuff this time of year. A good clean shot to the heart area with a soft tip 180 grain .308 and it should just about drop right there. You don't have to shoot a bear from very far away, unlike dear, you can get quite close to bear, uncomfortably close A good shot with a 20 GA slug will also do in a bear. You can also go up to a 16 or 12GA but I already have a 20GA and that's good enough for me. I also use my .308 for Moose and deer. Cost for ammo for a .308 is reasonable since I'm not into reloading my own cartridges.

As for wild boar, Well we don't have any of those around here so ??? but like I said, a .308 is probably plenty.

But you'll probably get a few that might say "You need more caliber, like an elephant gun or something", probably the same ones that in the towing forum won't pull a 2000lbs tent trailer with anything less than a 1-ton F350
