DSL modem problems
Last night, a lightning strike took out one of my DSL modems. When I had my DSL set up, I opted for the home networking stuff but I never got around to setting it up, so I had a spare modem since I only had one computer online (they sent me two modems). I replaced the blowed up modem with the other one, and now I keep getting messages saying "Windows failed to reinitialize IP" or something to that effect. Says to contact my system adminstrator, which would be Earthlink I guess, but I got tired of waiting (for 40 minutes on hold
) so I gave up, I guess I'll call them up one more time this evening when I get home from work. But since y'all saved my *** when I got virused, I figured I'd ask the computer gurus out there if y'all got any idea what I can try next to get online?
Try the easy thing first...if not I'll probably be on tonight maybe we can figure it out then if this doesnt work.
Have everything cabled and your DSL on.
If you are on Windows NT, 2000, XP....
Go to a command prompt (Start->run->cmd) Enter
Type: ipconfig /release
type: ipconfig /renew

some cable modems need to be programmed when you turn them on i replaced mine from comcast to a new version and it let me on line to comcast website only and i had to enter my account info in and it progammed the moden for me .
If after all that and still no-go.....try rebuilding the tcp/ip stack.
Go to a command prompt and type: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Then reboot and try again. If still no-go, the lightning may have taken out your NIC. Good news is, you gan get a new PCI NIC for around 10 bucks.

What kind of modem?
Are you using USB or ethernet?
What lights are lit on the modem?
Are you pulling an IP?
Static or Dynamic IP?
If your using a router, is the router pulling an IP (assuming your using a dynamic IP).
If not bypass the router and go straight into the modem. Then see if the PC has an IP.

I would say first...
Similar to Vader only less typing...
- Go to start/run and type winipcfg
- Click on OK
- then in the pull down select your Nit card
- Then click Release
- Then wait a a few seconds
- then click renew.
If no go then repeat steps 1-3
Then click release all
Then renew all
If still no go then come back and tell us what router you have. From that we can find the default url for that router and we'll see if you can ping it. Then you'll know if it's communicating.

Is the green DSL light on the router on and steady?

That is VERY true Randall (I work for those bastards).
BUT, if both modems are already provisioned in ICOMS, it should be good to go.
While it's very true his DSL modem needs to be synched....(do the synch lights look like they are on right, Quintin?)
The original post said he got a windows error message about tcp/ip not initialized. You won't get that from simply not having a connection at the router. This is more of a problem with tcp/ip on his computer.

WIN XP = run netsh form a command prompt. This is the one that works for me:
netsh > int *space* ip > reset > resetlog.txt
The ">" means ENTER
Win 98/ME = rip and re-install TCP/IP
