Jamz, cable was on the books, but I live out in the stix, so I was lucky to get DSL. Rumor has it that cable should be available by the end of this year out here though. I was gonna cancel my DSL last night, but instead they knocked $10 off my monthly bill and paid for the shipping and handling for my new modem (which was like $20; for 5 day ground shipping, for a fricking package that wouldn't weigh no more than a pound or so
) Fortunately I'm out of my contract agreement with Earthlink, so if this doesn't resolve it, it's going out the window.
I'm having to do all my posting from work or the library now, so I probably won't be around as much until I get this mess straightened out. Y'all bare with me, and mucho thanks for all the help so far.

I am adding THAT to my sig...WOO-HOO ! ! !
That fookin' ROX
They're assuming the modem is bad. You know what happens when you assume. There is a fault somewhere. I can think of no way to determine without swapping a piece of hardware where the fault is. Just because ipconfig or ping doesnt work it doesnt tell you whats broken. NIC's are famous for dying after an electrical storm. I'd say do your self a favor, run down to best buy and spend 15 bucks on the NIC to be sure. If you swap them and it fixes the prob you can return the modem.
Now, from my good ole days of being a field tech. There were plenty of times when the WAN port on a modem AND the NIC were both zapped. Just to throw that out there.

I'm a little skeptical that the modem/router is the problem. It could be I'm not saying that you cant get a bad one. But I would've wanted to dove a little deeper first. Sounds like techy was having a bad night and just wanted off the phone. I've been there and done that. I have see lighting hits get a card and the slot it's in but not go any further before. It's hard to tell what damage might can be. If I was to the point of trying new hardware, then a new cable would be the first thing I swapped, the na new card, if still dosent work I would move the new card to a different slot, then slap a modem on it probably a $30 BB or wally world special, if I didn't know anyone that had one I could try.
True Earthlink won't support other hardware but that just means they wont offer tech support with it. As a customer they have to give you the information so write it down. Then the brand that you buy you call thier tech support and bam they tell you how and where to put the info in at.
Edited to add:
I have earthlink too There was a problem with my account when I first went to set up my modem so I had to call and have them reset the account manualy before I ever used the account. LOL
While we were talking I told them that as soon as I got it set up that I was going to be plugging it into my D-link wireless router so everyone in the house on the hard network would be have internet still. (Imagine 4 computer sharing dial up before dsl was available here a up until a few months ago. Yea that was fun times!) The tech was like "Sir, we dont support that." I said "I know" she says "So if you have problems you cant call us and get help." I said "I know, but I can call D-link if it's a network problem and if its an ISP I will call you still right?" She says "Yes sir" So I said "Well then there isn't a problem that will arise that I dont have tech support for. But trust me if I call anyone I will have eliminated everything else first. and laughed." She says "Alright as long as you know we don't support it." I've never had a problem out of either one yet.

Thank gawd for cable modems.
I have heard those horror stories about DSL providers and how their customer services sux huge monkey nut sacks, but you have just proven that story true.
We get people everyday calling and saying they are gonna switch to DSL. I always tell em, "go ahead, I'will leave your Account active, because I am sure you will be calling back by the end of the week to reconnect. That way you wont have to pay a reconnect fee."
I had a guy call back within 2 hours, he got the run around the very first day with Sprint DSL.
I hate my job, and I hate this company, but we sure do take goooooood care of the customer.

Update:
Well, I'm giving Earthlink the boot. 2+ weeks later, I still have no new modem (and I have no definite idea whether that'll fix me up or not). I called customer service and tech support again a couple nights ago, spent half an hour on hold, finally talked to a tech support guy who said he'd talk to the "lead engineer" and call me back. Two days later, no call back. I wrote them a check to pay my bill this month about a week ago for a service that doesn't even work right now.
I know it's my fault the first modem blew up, but I don't think I'm asking for anything extraordinary, just an internet service that works. Their customer service and tech support departments aren't really doing anything to get me squared away. I need an internet connection, not just for goofing around on here, but my module calibration files I use for work are only available via the net (well, I could get them by CD, but it costs more and it's slower), and my PFM and calibration files are almost a month out of date. Now they're making my job more difficult to do, and that's not cool.
I'll try calling one more time when I get home tonight. Sucks, I was starting to like Earthlink.
