Test Drove A Chevy!!!
I have a 94' ranger with 136k miles. I bought it used in 97'.
In 8 years and 100,000 miles, other than maintence stuff, I've had to:
-Replace a clutch at 80,000 miles- pretty good
-Replace 4x4 hubs (they were junk)
-Replace two front ball joints and two u-joints
-Replace a radiator & heater core
That's pretty excellent in my opinion. I beat the hell out of the truck too. Still runs and starts with no problems.

My wife and I had a Focus. Great car. Never a problem in the 3 yrs we had it.
I beat the snot out of it and never a squeek, rattle or groan. It was as tight when we returned it as when it was new.
You have to go with what you like and what you feel will be reliable.
That said - I have a '04 F150 with a 11/03 build date. The odometer is now just under 31,000 miles. I have never had my truck in the shop for any repairs and it does'nt need any. I make sure that all of the proper maintenance is completed as directed. In addition, I am able to keep a 17mpg average on low grade gas even though this is my daily driver.
I can't guarantee that you won't have any problems with a new F150 just like no one else can guarantee that you will.
I found this site to be very useful when comparing different brands of trucks.

My friends dad bought a brand new chevy diesel dually and had nothing but problems with it for the 2 months he had it. He traded it in for a new gmc almost exactly the same....it's much more reliable he said and alot less problems. He's had it now for about 5 months....still no problems, he also put a chip in it to boost the power quite a bit and my friend gets to drive, he says it's crazy. I'd personally go with a ford of course...but that's my opinion. Have you really looked at all the different vehicles you could get?
If you want an honest and objective opinion, listen to me. I just traded in my '03 duramax for a '05 F150.
First off, Chevy's are not junk. Mine was a great truck. I have 275,000 miles on my 2002 GMC van and it still runs and drives like new, only repairs have been an alternator, 2 serpentine belts, lift pump, rear axle seal (twice) and a set of thermostats. It still has the original front brake pads which look to have 25% life left. Not bad service out of a supposed POS.
This Ford is my sixth truck, my last 5 were Chevies. They were all good trucks. I didn't switch brands because I thought Ford made a better truck, I just like the new style and the regular cab design of the new F150.
Don't sell your F150 because other people are having problems.. People have problems with every brand of truck. Go to the Chevy or Dodge forums and you'll see the same stuff. Don't sweat it.
If you're set on getting a diesel truck, I would highly recommend the Duramax. I loved mine and wouldn't have traded it for a Powerstroke or a Cummins. I used to always think that the Cummins was the superior engine and if Chevy had offered it in their truck I would have rather had it.. But then after owning my d-max for almost two years, I drove a Dodge w/ the cummins and it did nothing for me. The Duramax is as good as it gets.
The only real turnoff of the Chevy is the IFS front end, it's very weakly designed for a HD truck. The tie rods are no bigger than what you find on a Saturn, and the drag link, pitman and idler arms are all weak points. It can be beefed up but it costs money.
