Cool Overdrive or No Overdrive???

Hey Ya'll,

This is a silly question that I am posing, but I will ask anyway. One of my friends tells me that you should drive with the o/d off when you are doing normal city driving, and with the h o/d on when you are on the highway. I always drive with the o/d on.

So my question is "Does having the o/d off while driving in the city improve gas mileage"? I would think that it doesn't becuase the engine would have to work harder but who knows.

Does overdrive even kick in when your in the city? I would think it wouldn't do anything unless your at cruising speeds.

I think that's a judgement call. If you are on hills and want your engine to do some of the braking then turn off the OD. If you see your transmission shifting from 3rd to OD and back a lot then I'd turn off the OD.

How fast do you drive in the city? Is it hilly?

My O/D kicks in all the time in the city. Anytime I am over about 40 MPH. i assume it is saving gas when it does this or it would not be in O/D.

The only time you ever NEED to turn off your overdrive, or the only time it will even be affected is when you're on the highway, and it keeps jumping back and forth from 3rd to 4th (overdrive) gear.

Being able to turn it off is mostly for when towing at highway speeds to avoid the above mentioned. If you're towing on a flat road, and it will stay in 4th gear without jumping, then there's no need to turn it off...

I own a Mustang. Trust me.

"The only dumb question, is the question not asked."

Maybe you should throw a cowboy hat on your wife and let him borrow her for awhile...
