The Black Beret....

Just watching the news and saw an report about Pvt Lindsay and the Iraq abuse case.

I saw her standing there in a black beret and it still urkes me that they took the special meaning away from the Ranger's black beret and made them standard issue.

Can't imagine how it must upset the Rangers.

I imagine it went over like a turd in the punchbowl to the Ranger community. Hell, some Army folk I know who aren't Rangers don't like the berets.

I think General Shalikashvili is the only one who liked the idea. I can assure you I felt like a cheap *****/poser when I had to wear one for the first time. I knew that I had not earned it.

GEN Shali was retired by then. It was GEN Eric Shinseki's idea... Either way, there were lots of folks that didn't like wearing the black beret.

It's a total pain to put on...two hands. Too hot in the summer. Most people don't know how to wear, shave, or shape it.

I got my tab, but I'm not part of Regiment. If the beret was a lock, I wish they had given us the tan one and left the Regiment boys with black...they had it before the rest of us.

I think the beret should have been the colors of your particular branch...

IE- Infantry, light blue, Signal- orange (a plesant shade of orange please)- and left black, green, and red to the "elite" (Rangers, SF) and the easily talked into things (airborne).

Maybe a kumquat orange or even a little darker sunset orange maybe. But that would clash with the uniforms and solid orange uniforms would look like prison inmate attire.

Sorry I couldn't resist .... I started to just laugh at my thoughts and not post.... but I just couldn't help myself...

Like a sniper... "The shot was there so I had to take it."

Wear the colors of your branch is a good idea but do half the corps have colors? Ordy and Quartermasters? And what color would arty have worn?

I think that would be a good idea cause I could wear a half orange, half light blue one, half yellow (I know too many halfs). Ownage.

Isn't arty a dark shade of green?

Heck, give them lime green so they aren't confused for the REAL green berets...

I was recruited by SF and another Army special force.. I was interested; but knew I wouldn't make it because I couldn't swim. So, I went to the briefings as instructed, but after they said we could leave- I left...

The ONLY posting I regret not pursuing was WHCA.... I was SOOO busy trying to get an Army posting to McDill AFB, to get to Florida where all the women are!!!!

Dumb@$$, dumb@$$, dumb@$$ me!!!!

Imagine beign able to put THAT on my resume''!!!

Because we would still want to look like soldiers- not drag queens!

I was thinking more along the lines on UT's orange..

Burnt Orange.

Yep, I hate the beret...it's been years & it still feels odd to put on..
Maybe we'll get another new headgear with the new uniform?!
course that bugs me too...more dollars out of pocket, & the new recruits get them before we do....ARGH...
