None of those three will die... I choose 'end process' multiple times and they won't go down.

Also, just for giggles, I've tried to uninstall my Trend Micro... no luck. I get a Windows Installer error message.

You might just try to google those...
Yeah, I googled them... the three refer back to Trend Micro... which is what I still think is causing it.

While in safe mode, try to backup your important junk.
Then format/restore the pc.

I need to format my pc pretty soon, it's been a couple of years.

Absolute LAST resort for me. Although, I'm getting close to that point.

If you can make it to windows update there is a process that must be running to allow the installer to uninstall. It also must be running to activate updates on windows updates. I had this problem about 2 months ago it got disabled and When I went to windows update it told me the process had to be running and the name of it plus how to enable it. Then I was able to run unistaller again too. But I can't remeber now waht it was... It may not even be the same thing but is worth a shot.

Hey RP,

Left ya a message but you may not have gotten it. MSN's tech # is 1-800-386-5550. I don't if you'll be able to benefit from it, put it never hurts to try.

On my cell? I accidently left it at work last night...

Thanks for the number... I think I may have figured it out though... at least I think I have...

Going to try the fix now... it *IS* Trend Micro related.

FIXED!

Thanks for everyone's help!

It turns out that the 'update' that Trend Micro released yesterday was corrupt and has caused this problem with multitudes of computers... I disabled the Trend Micro services and, presto, no more problems.

This was a good lesson though... I was worried I'd have to format... nothing has been backed up in MONTHS... I will be burning several discs tonight.

You sound like me...
I dont back up until there is a scare... many time I have had to pull the hard drive and put it as a slave on another puter to get my files so I could format it.

Just in case someone needs it...

Trend Micro Knowledge Base

I'd have to say that I've lost quite a bit of faith in their service at this point...

Glad you got it worked out. In the future once you get into safe mode remove the offending program via Control panel, if you are convinced that is the problem and reboot.

If you had to reformat you would have been better off going out and buying a second hard drive for next to nothing formating that and then sticking your original drive in as a slave drive. You could then pull your data off that way. No way should a Windows corruption cost you your data. The only way you should lose your data is if the drive has a phyical problem.

And just so you know...I haven't backed up in months either....sigh....great I guess I'll do it tonight....thanks for ruining my web browsing for the night.

I got burnt long ago about not backing up. To the point that I use 3 different products to back up with and hope I never have to use them. I back up any time I have a lot of updates and everything seem to be working okay. Usually 1-2 times a month. I did have to use a back up to restore the whole hard drive about 4 years ago and had done a back up just a few days before. It may be overkill how I do my back ups, but it is cheap insurance.

Trend Micro isnt a very good anti virus to begin with (I dont think Ive ever heard much praise about them...), I would try to get a different anti-virus program.

I like AVG personally (their free AV is pretty darn good as well, its what I use and I have not gotten any virii to date).
But Norton would be a big step up from trend micro's stuff.

Glad you got it fixed anyway.

Johngs, on the other Ford board, someone there got nailed by a trojan while using AVG. This was one Norton lists as being added to there definitions in 2002. I don't know all the specifics on his problem, but he finally got rid of it with Norton and some other software.
If you care to, you can read the details here.

Tried that... couldn't uninstall from Safe. Very weird.
