Need Some Computer Help...
Trend Micro is an EXCELLENT program. The bottom line is that they released a bad update which, in turn, just about cost me my HDD to a format.
Lay a copy of Trend Micro on the table for $50 and I'll buy a dozen before I buy one copy of Norton or McAfee for $15.
I sold McAfee and Norton too long... I know better than to utilize them...
It's all a personal preference thing. All of them will have a problem here and there; no one is immune from viruses, spyware, and other hacks. No one.

Just goin by what Ive heard.
Of course, those were old versions, so maybe their new stuff is better.
As for me, I dont like Norton either. It came on my mom's Dell (with Internet Security and all that) and all it did was cause the laptop to not be able to access the internet constantly without settings being changed everytime you turned it on.
AVG is free, and I havent had any virus problems, so Ill stick with what works, just like everybody else here

RP,
Did you try disabling all the related services in safe mode and then rebooting? Just curious.
I use to think Norton was the best. Their last couple of versions have been resource hogs. I still use them but this is their last year on my system. Their products have really dived in quality and performance.
I use McAfee to secure my network at work. Never had an infection there which speaks volumes due to the type of users I have.
I've used AVG for the people who are too cheap to buy a AV program and it works ok.
The bottom line is they all basically detect 100% of in the Wild viruses. I've seen systems get infected with all the above mentioned. Sometimes its zips, lack of current updates, etc.
TM is next on my try out list for my personal PC.
BTW here are independent test results for AV programs:

I'm not a big fan of McAfee at all! When I worked for a local ISP I was running McAfee at the house and the office had Norton. I would go around and update the offices definitions twice a week. then on the same day I would go home and update my McAfee. Norton would ussally have any where from 1-5 new defs. then when I got home McAfee wouldn't have any for a couple of weeks.
They say there are 200 new viruses that come out everyday... NO ONE will beable to keep thier Defs. up with that kind of pruduction. BUT Norton seems to spend much, much, more time trying to, than McAfee does.

McAfee releases an update weekly and during outbreaks releases extra dats whenever necessary. I've gotten updates a number of times in the same week. With their EPO server I never visit a workstation and it reports if a virus is detected and what machines aren't up to date.
Nothing is perfect but I'm quite satisfied with their enterprise software.

Thats true but my feelings are if they don't have the definition for it then how can it know if a certain virus is there or not. After comapring the 2 Home Editon vs Home Edition. on my small home wan/lan I get many more Defs. consistantly from Noton. So in theory it should beable to locate and identify many more potential threats.
Like we have all said, nothing is fool proof. If your on the net you already have many threats and malisous programs on your computer right this second regardless of what we use. The definitions just have not and may not be created for it in order for us to know that they are there. Until there is to many of them and they corrupt enough files. nothing beats MS System file checker, it is a techs best friend and the final line of defense.
It tells you what files have been changed and when.

Ouch thats not going to be good for business for them!
Yet one main reason to not enable automatic updates! I want to know what is being installed so atleast I might have an idea of what has been added or changed recently if there is a problem or a conflict.
There will be some poor lazy I.T. that will go to go to work in the morning and wonder why all of his computers are down... He thought he had his Network set up good with little to low maintenince (sp?) by setting everything to get automatic updates.

It's called AsAP... it's very handy. I track all of our office computers from my laptop... further, I can see who's updated and who is out of date. I really like it... Very handy for a small office like ours.

Blue light special.

I'm sure they will do some PR to get the thier customers faith back. If I do buy, I sure hope that they do anyway.
For future reference you can check what those strange processes are by going to Process Library . This site will also tell you what those mysterious .dll's are.
And I agree with vader716. McAfee is the best but AVG will do.

Urgent Notification - Trend Micro Pattern File 2.594.00 Causes High CPU Utilization
On April 22, 2005 at approximately 3:30 pm Pacific (11:30pm GMT) Trend Micro posted a pattern file (2.594.00) which had the potential to interact with certain computing configurations and cause computer performance issues for some users of PC-cillin, OfficeScan (including the OfficeScan component of Client/Server Suite for SMB, and Client/Server/Messaging Suite for SMB), and ServerProtect for NT.
This specific pattern file was only available during an approximately 90-minute time window. Trend Micro removed the pattern file from our Web sites and Active Update servers at 5:02 pm (1:02am GMT), and immediately took steps to post a new pattern file. Subsequent pattern files do not cause these issues.
For any customers experiencing instability, Trend Micro has provided a set of solutions which can be found under the Support section of Trend Micro’s Web site. Additionally, Trend Micro has extended support hours especially to help those customers who were affected by this issue. Further information, instructions, and details can also be found on the Trend Micro Web site at: http://www.trendmicro.com/pattern594
We sincerely apologize for this incident and will continue to improve our processes so that problems such as this do not happen in the future.
