Need Some Computer Help...

First and foremost, don't reply if it's going to be a 'that's why I use a MAC' or 'Linux...blah blah blah' reply...

My problem:

Start up. Windows loads normally. Gets to my 'select a profile screen' (I have one for my wife and one for me). Choose either profile. Loads, seemingly, normal...although, my gut tells me that it's loading 'faster' than usual. Starts loading the regular drivers that I have enabled via msconfig/startup (which is only my anti-virus and a weather program). After about 3 or 4 seconds, my 'SYSTEM' process via Ctrl-Alt-Del pegs the processor to 99% and allows NOTHING else to work.

I know it sounds like a virus or spyware but, after three runs of Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, and my virus scan (and also the free Trend Micro House Call), it's located NOTHING (just a tracking cookie or two). All definitions are updated.

I've removed everything from startup (not even anti or my weather program -- weather watcher) and I still get this problem.

Currently, I'm in safe mode and am trying to figure what in the heck is going on... I have a weird hunch that it has something to do with my anti-virus program (Trend Micro PC Illan) but, I can't even get on the normal log in side to attempt to remove it because of the processor lag.

This happend when I was viewing a radar image last night from the National Weather Service and attempted to load another page. The browser timed out, locked up, and froze. Mind you, I was attempting to load the IE screen BEFORE my Trend Micro had come up in the system tray. Trend Micro never loaded but, the new IE window, eventually, did (after a reboot).

Thoughts? HELP!

Boot using step by step confirmation... That will tell you exactly where the hang up is. Then you can go from there.

Brad...

Can you let it come up normally and then give it the three-finger-salute (CTRL-ALT-DEL) one time? That should get you to the task manager where you can look under the PROCESSES tab to see what is grabbing the CPU.

How do I do that? I don't see any option of that nature inside of the Advanced Safe Mode screen (Shift-F8 on boot).

THANKS!

Dave:

Yep. I can get there.

The process that's snubbing everything else is "SYSTEM" username is "SYSTEM". It's pulling around 178K Memory. Occasionally, a process called PCCPW.exe manages to get around 22% but then is quickly over vamped by the SYSTEM again (which pegs out at 99% and holds strong).

THANKS!

Is it "system" that's showing as a process or "system.exe"? "system is the only one that should be showing...

Different Boards use different commands... It should be an option on the

Boot w/ CD rom Support
Boot w/ network support
Boot in safe mode

Blah blah blah screen
One of them should be

Boot Normal w/ Step by Step confirmation

or something like that I cant remeber the exact wording.

Edited to add:
It takes for ever to boot this way because it ask you whether or not to load each driver one by one. But if you say yes to one and it lock up then you can go back do it again and say no to that one the next time. Then after you get through them all and it is running in normal mode you can go in and repair that driver(s) or disable it/them or what ever.

System is usually your background services like file copying, network protocols, stuff like that. You can try going into the "control panel, administractive tools, and services" and try shutting stuff off there untill you find out what it is.

You might loose internet access and access to different things on your computer like a scanner or whatever. That's ok, when you reboot it'll all turn back on.

Thanks PSS... I'll give this a try.

I don't see that option but, I'll give it another look. BTW, this is a DELL 4550...

Thank you VG... I'll give this a 'go' as well. I appreciate it.

Here are my mistery processes that are running in normal mode and not in SAFE (besides a couple of SYSTEM (user)processes):

PCCPFW.exe
wdfmgr.exe
tmproxy.exe
tmntsrv.exe

Three of those four are Trend Micro files (the wdfmgr is a windows media player process). Further, I increased the speed on the task manager processes tab (VIEW - UPDATE SPEED - HIGH) and, I continually see the PCCPFW.exe (Trend Micro's firewall) rise to the top and snag around 22% of the processor and then fall back to the bottom with 0%.

With Trend Micro having been totally removed from 'Startup' via msconfig, should I still be seeing multliple processes?

THANKS!!

I'm not seing any of those on mine so it should be safe to diasable them temporarily because they apperently are not critical to windows.

There's a website somewhere that you can type in a process and it will tell you what it's from, and what it does. I'm not at home (where I have it bookmarked) or I'd tell you...

You might just try to google those...

While in safe mode, try to backup your important junk.
Then format/restore the pc.

I need to format my pc pretty soon, it's been a couple of years.
