if you don't want a barker, definately do not get a Samoyed...

Since you want a lap dog, that shouldn't be a problem...

Have the cat now, after having to put the last dog down some years ago. If I ever get another animal, it will be from the pound.

I have had three Black Labs over the years and I loved every one of them. One died in her sleep and the other two died in my arms. Labs are wonderful dogs, but they chew everything they can get in their mouths for at least their first year. Everything - shoes, toys, furniture - everything. Be prepared.

I now have a Great Dane (did I say I like big dogs?). He is an absolute delight, graceful as the day is long. He is a house dog and, big as he is (150+), he never knocks anything over in the house. He also thinks he is a lap dog. He sits on the couch (and on my lap if I let him) with his front legs still on the ground.

In deference to my young daughter, we also have a Jack Russell terrier. I always said I'd never have a little dog, but I'm glad we got her. She was hyper for about the first three or four years, but she has settled down now. She's very smart and easy to train. No problems with house breaking at all. Great watch dog - she barks at any unusual noise outside. She loves to climb into anybody's lap and get some shut eye. Jack Russells may not be the best dogs if you have little kids around, but I have three grandsons age 4 and younger who have not had any problems with her so far. I'd get another one in a second.

Maybe I just like all dogs. That's very possible.

Look into a chesapeake bay retriever, a wonderfull breed and many shelters around the country looking for someone to adopt... A truly great animal.

^^^^^^ As cute as they are, we tell everyone to never ever get a shar-pei (sp.?). As inbred as an animal can be, and have life long chronic skin problems.

The one on the right may actually be a shaved chow-chow. shar-peis were originally bred from chows. Both have the same black tongue. Shave a chow chow, and you've got a dog that looks exactly like a non-wrinkled sharpei.

As far as Labs chewing every thing in sight. Well my first Lab black female, did chew a little until I stopped her. Just go buy the Bitter Apple spray, when you see the dog start to chew, spray whatever it is the dog is chewing and they'll never chew it again. I would do that and then spray a little on my finger and rub it in her mouth. LOL it was kinda funnmy to see her face , and watch her lick her lips for about 5 minutes afterwards. Anyway, it took about 2 weeks of me catching her chewing and spraying this stuff and she never chewed again. Now my male Yellow lab, hes never chewed anything in the house except a pillow once and that was it. The big thing is that dogs need to chew stuff, so make sure, no matter what kind of dog you have, that you get him or her some of there own toys to play with or chew on.
