Cairn Terriers (toto from the wizard of oz) Do Not shed. Not at all. some of their fur actually has to be pulled out every year for new fur to grow.

Also, if shedding is a major concern, remember, just because a dog has short hair doesn't mean it sheds less than a longer haired breed. In fact, the opposite is often true.

They travel well, don't shed ANY hair (they have fleece not fur) so perfect for someone who has asthma.
In addition to the Bichon Frise, another small dog that does not shed is a Maltese:

I know it looks like a lot of hair but that is for show dogs, pets can be clipped so they aren't quite so lost in their fur. They do need brushed frequently but they don't shed like most dogs.

My folks have a Schipperke:

Great dog, very smart. They are not, however, a non-shedding dog. For the home wrench007, the Maltese or Bichon Frise. For the trail UC, the Schipperke.

All of the other dogs mentioned are great animals too, I am a huge dog lover and would not exclude any from the list. I just thought these 3 were a little more tailored to what the guys want. We will probably be getting a Blue Heeler in the next couple of years and we had an Australian Shepard mix, smartest dog I've ever seen! But right now Casey is kinda my fav!!

I vote for Bassett Hounds! VERY low maintenance dogs.
Just feed & water them, and poke them with a stick to see if they are still alive from time to time. lol

We did have a Malamute/Wolf Hybrid but he had a seizure and died about 3 years ago. That's when we got Casey, she was abandoned in Kotzebue and nearly starved to death. The animal shelter in Cordova brought her to town, and nursed her back to health and we adopted her 3 years ago come June. She was still really skinny but as you can see, she's the picture of health now and enjoying a much better life...i.e...spoiled rotten!!

Ignore the text, that was for something else on my site.
Took picture yesterday afternoon. TJ, best dog I have ever had!
Shed's year round though, so he doesn't get as much inside time as he thinks he deserves. He does get to come in and beat up on my wife's 4lb Long Hair Applehead Chihauhua, Ranger. Talk about a mean SOB, yapper, yapper, yapper! I hate that dog as much as I love TJ.

* and yes, I am very lazy, I name the dogs for what we are driving at the time we get a dog....

I second the idea of getting a dog from your local shelter. These dogs need loving homes, and often times they are more loving and more healthy then any dog you'll find at a pet store or from a breeder (also, a lot cheaper). I got my Maggie at a shelter about a year and a half ago and I love her to death!
Labs are great, Golden Retrievers and Huskys are also some of my fav's, so I got a mix of all three!

People at work think I'm loosing my mind. That made me laughed so hard. That was wonderful, poke them with a stick. It is true, they are lazy buggers.

If you want a small dog, get you a weiner dog, they are great. I have had them for years and to be no bigger than they are, are quite protective. I have since gotten a couple of labs (chocloate and yellow) and they are very smart and very protective dogs. This is Molly, shes 13 weeks old and very smart. She didnt need to be house trained, she just goes to the door when she needs to go outside and loves to ride in the truck:

THATS IT!

I'm getting a LAB. I was wanting to get a Border Collie, but someone mentioned they are "bad dogs" as pups and will tear everything up. NOT GOOD.

I want a pooch that will ride in the truck with daddy. So far everyone has nothing but good things to say about Labs.
