I need advice, PLEASE help!!

I was wondering if anyone (besides TUFF) has changed careers and how they went about doing it. Ive been in the same business for 11 years and im getting tired of it. Ive been thru the gamit, from entry level technician, top tech, manager and now im in a company at a production level. Im just tired of it and am seriously considering a change of career. Do you guys and gals have any advice? How do you go from one field to another with no real experience in the new field? I feel like there are so many variables and I dont know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone want to hire me??

A. Be prepared to take a pay cut
B. Find something you really enjoy & start learning/training now
C. Be prepared to take a pay cut

If you can handle the potential financial loss, start looking for your new career and don't look back! Boats just not cuttin' it anymore huh?

He's right. I must be insane to agree with Dzervit, but he's absolutely right.

like Dzervit said, be prepared for the paycut...

but if you really want to do it... then just go for it and don't look back. the finances will work themselves out later.

Well im honestly getting tired of the whole industry. Its such a small area where I live and too much backstabbing goes on. Plus im just not happy with what im doing right now. All sorts of broken promises and..well you guys know. Anyway, I still love boats just not here and not driving 1 hr each way to and from work to put up with this B.S.

I took a HUGE paycut to come here, so imnot to worried about that aspect of it. I took the cut anticipating good things but again Broken Promises...

What do you really want to do Brewdude?
Do you have your mind set on something or just a change?
Maybe there's some kind of course or training you could do at night school before you quit the job you already have.

Man, every day I wonder why I come to work. I have 17 years in and it is just so stale and reduntdant.
I always wished I would of went straight into law enforcement but could never of afforded it at this late stage, so I got sponsored for the academy and do it part time to fill the need.
I only come to my full time job to surf the web and relax. It gets so boring though. I only have to do 11 more years until I can retire with 28 and still be fairly young.
If I thought I could do without the money, I would leave today and never miss it. Just to close to full retirement to quit though....
I admire the people with the ***** to up and quit and find a new career!
I think I would be a professional snorkler in the Keys if I had to do it all over again!

Not all career changes involve a pay cut and extensive training.

I thought I had reached the glass ceiling in goat herding.
I realized there was absolutely no promotion potential.

I made a leap of faith, changed career fields and became an Exotic dancer.

I had to get drunk to do it at first but, after a while I could Exotic dance all over the place at the drop of a hat.

Made so much money, before I knew it I was retired from exotic dancing and back at goat herding with a wad of cash.

I could give damn what Bush does with Social Security, I got well over 12 hundred bucks.

I'm going through a similar situation right now. I've been working at the same laboratory for 17 years, then the company merged with a lab out of Colorado. Didn't take a pay hit, but my health insurance almost tripled which made ends tight. A few days before Thanksgiving, the staff was brought into a production meeting and I found out through a series of powerpoint slides that my job was being moved from Fairbanks to Colorado and I was being let go. So now, I'm forced to look for a new job, which I did not plan on doing. I've gotten a lot of advice:
-It's easier to find another job when you still have a job to go to.
-Take the opportunity to find a job you really want (in my case, construction management)
-Volunteer in stuff that you are interested in, shouldn't cost you money, and you'll get a little experience that could make a difference
-The first 30 seconds of the interview is the most important.
-If Raoul is interviewing, dress like a goat in a thong.
There's a bunch of others, but I can't think of any right now. I hope everything works out for you, keep us posted!

If you going to change careers then make the change to something you like. You might as well do something that makes you happy. My childhood dream till now was to be a Police Officer. I in the midst of that change into law enforcement. I write my test this coming Saturday. Money is important, but if your happy doing what you love then money does not matter. Ask yourself if you could do anything what would it be? (drinking and watching tv does not count).

Ever consider being your own boss??

Thanks for the advice guys (keep it comming) I really dont know what I want to do. I just know that where im at isnt for me and I need a change. Ive been looking at my life and trying to figure out what I like to do and maybe try to hinge off of that and search for a new career.

RAOUL..Although goat herding sounds like a very lucrative business, I just dont have the formal training I would need to get started so I dont think that would be the way for me to go. As far as the exotic dancer,,well Im also participating in the 'Fat bastards" thread on this site...'Nuff said

I feel your pain. I spent 10 years in the milirtary as law enforcment, and got out after realizing I had 1 more promotion and no possibility for an improvment in job responsibility. I had been running shifts for 6 of those 10 years and I had another 10 years of running shifts. The thought was too much so I left. I then got a job at a local PD and last year made the most money I've ever made, 37,000. Imagine that 13 year and max out at 38,000, with a 4-year degree. I look at my wife, who has 7 years expierence and no college at all and makes 1000's more than me.

I'm tired of arresting the same @#$%nutz week in and week out only to have the courts give then time served and 2 years probation. Gee imagine that I can beat my wife serve one night in jail and get 2 years probation so I can violate it and get arrested again for......beating my wife. I got in this work to help people, but this ain't worth it. No money, lousy hours, 90% of the people lie to you, all of this for the privilidge of carring a gun everywhere you go for protection from the idiot you just arrested for beating his wife. Heck even the teachers get better protection when their not teaching than off duty cops.
