As far as I'm concerned, not having NHL simply means that I don't have to go to all the trouble of running the hockey pool. But, we've had the same pool going since Mario was a rookie, so it's kind of a shame to break the continuity.

As compensation for losing the NHL, I have my Memorial Cup Champion Kelowna Rockets to cheer for. They look like a good pick to go all the way again this year.

Did you see the way Shea Weber knocked the crap out of anyone foolish enough to try and go around him? He and Phanuf were an unbeatable pairing at the WJC...

hockey is the only sport i watch. when i was a kid it was football & baseball, then i got a little older, and started hanging out with friends who were into hockey and i got addicted to it. havent followed any other sports since and i havent hung with the 'hockey guys' in years.

dont know why it took so long, but on the drive into work the other day i was imagining drawing the salary that say bure was, or jagr and holick are making now, and then bitching about wanting more.

its nuts.

was it shannon or yzerman who recenty said something to the effect of 'we better watch what we are doing, as a player i have pride in my sport, but if you look in the papers, we are not playing, and no one cares'

then there are players who said they would rather see the league crumble than accept a cap.

its a battle of the millionares vs the billionares, and now i dont have a sport to watch. i have no pity for either side, and if i could get the harford wolf pack games on tv i would turn my back on the pros, and follow them instead.

IMO, hockey is the greatest sport ever, and requires the highest amount of skill and talent.....I miss the NHL badly! I've been a huge Wings fan since I was about 8, I'm not one of those who just jumped on the band wagon when they started winning.

I've noticed that many people that don't like hockey, are quite often people who don't know how to skate....anyone can dribble a basketball...throw a baseball, but learn how to skate, then be able to control a hockey puck and everything else associated with hockey....that takes skill.

We are lucky to have an AHL team here in Rochester, they even managed to draw 18,000 when they played a game in Buffalo so there are people who miss hockey. I've always liked the AHL, more fighting. I hope this strike does not kill the NHL but I have to say that I think a salary cap is inevitable, it protects against geedy players and stupid owwners. It's just a matter of how much damage they do to ther sport before they finally cave in.
Have you ever watched an NHL game in person? If you haven't I'd bet you'd change your mind when you did.

I use to be the same way until I watched my first game in person.

Hockey? No I do not miss it...I still sufering, ce I can't speel because the Flames lost to Tampa bay...Tragic I say, Hope the Stanley cup did not float out into the ocean with all the huricans, in Florida early this season dam, ou might think I'm water logged here...

The N.H.L and the players union have lost touch with basic reality, Calgary Flames did excellant in last years run to the Stanley cup, with one of the smallest payrolls in the H.H.L, Teams like the Rangers, Wings have the highest.

I do miss watching the Flames play as well as the oilers, and I admit to having difficulty accepting the wages paid to chase a puck arround the ice, Reality is far more important than entertainment, Hockey Players could have done more to promote thier game and public opion by helping Florida victums of Hurricanes...

So in general, most people living in southern sates of the U.S don't care if the N.H.L has to compete with collage foot ball. N.F.L, N.B.A.

Oh heck ya, I miss it. But I only want it back when they fix the game, and pay these self important players a realistic wage. I'm willing to wait for that.

It sucks, because the Flames have (had) such momentum right now. 7 years of futility were about to reverse themselves.

Calgary Flames, the TRUE champions in 6 games!

IMO. I feel bad for the players who just want to play the game, and also for the ones going for some milestone records. I am not sure how many players are really behind the union.
I'd be willing to bet 70% of the players would have accepted the last NHL offer. It's their so called "union" leadership that is steering the ship towards the iceberg.

Anytime one of these guys speaks up, however, and says they would accept the current offer etc., they find a horse's head in their bed the next day...

It's a shame. They players back in the 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's all played for peanuts back then, they played because they loved the game and wanted to play for the fans. And gamed back then were always sold out and tickets were cheap. It's all about the money now. Millions of dollars to play a game. Why don't they pay Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Military troops the same wage they have a real job to do.

I can't understand why they bicker about more money when they could retire at the age of 25? I think big corporations wrecked the sports world with the big wages.

A few quotes out of an article today
Unless there is a drastic change in the next two or three weeks, the season is dead. And if that happens, everybody loses, but the players lose most of all.
After the 1994 World Series was canceled, baseball attendance dropped by 20 percent -- and hockey relies far more on ticket-sale revenue than baseball does.
While players and owners squabble over how to split the pot, the pot is in danger of shrinking.
If this season is somehow saved, the effect of the lockout will be limited. If the season is lost, the league won't recover for years.
If the players don't like what they could get now, they need to understand it will only get worse next year. And they will each have lost at least a year's worth of salary they will never get back.
There is only one way to salvage this season: The players will have to fold like a newspaper.
For much of the last decade, hockey owners cashed in on big expansion fees with little thought about how it would affect the game in the long term. That's a big reason hockey is where it is.
Both sides are wrong in some ways. The players are the ones with a time limit (Career) and are the ones who are screwing themselves.

Here's a question, if the NHL brought in replacement players...would you watch or go to a game?

Before this year I used to go two a couple of Buffalo Sabres games a year, but I almost always see more fights when I'm watching their AHL team the Rochester Amerks. Anyone who is really going through hockey withdrawl, give indoor lacrosse a try if they have it near you. If you love hockey there is a lot to like in Lacrosse as well, especially indoor.

a friend of mine is a season ticket holder for the rangers. we bs about hockey alot.

he flat out said he would not continue to buy season tickets with replacement players.

he & i would go to some games, but he would not be willing to shell out the thousands for a whole season of 'replacement' hockey. i would think most season ticket holders would feel the same way.

i would still watch on tv, but as said before, hockey & huge tv contracts dont seem to go together.

I really miss NHL Hockey! I am a diehard Bruins fan. The lockout sucks but hopefully the league will come out of this in better shape. I am sick of greedy whining athletes that think playing a game is worth millions. I would play for free if I could! I love hockey. Hockey players are the toughest guys in pro sports. Football comes next. I would like to see some NFL guys try to play 4 games a week and 82 games a season! Baseball is so easy they can play 2 games back to back. The only guy that gets tired is the pitcher.

Do I ever miss hockey. Oh may lord. Saturday nights just arn't the same. Not that I need a reason to drink beer but hockey and beer go hand and hand. Think this was the year that the Senators were going to take the cup.

I sure hope this stupid stike ends soon. I hate it when people argue over money when they are getting
paid to play a game.

Hockey is an OK sport. I live in STL which is huge hockey country, but I don't miss it. The league had become horrible to watch on TV or in person (save for the hot chicks). To foreign, to boring, to many double standards for the prima donnas. I think the players thought the fans would cause some huge uproar, but apparently they were wrong. Hockey is quickly becoming a joke. Right now, its not even a top 10 sport much less a top 4 sport.
