the nationally average gas price was 50 cents cheaper

if you use a tank of gas a week

you are paying at least 50 bucks more a month for gas than last year

Here is some interesting information on how the price of gas breaks down:

Primer on gas prices Also explains why California pays more for gas then most of us…

Here is another link which shows, when adjusted for inflation, we are paying pretty cheap prices for gas. In 1981, adjusted for inflation, we were paying $2.99 for premium fuel in 2004 money…

Gas price fact sheet

It does suck paying what we are paying but when you look at it when adjusted for inflation we are pretty damn lucky.

Few more things to remember about gas prices and the reason they are higher then they should be is environmental wackos.

We haven’t built a new refinery in over 20 years. That in conjunction with the fact that you have some really screwy states that allow the environmental wackos to get away with anything they want have MANY different blend requirements.

Many different blend requirements combined with NO new refineries = HIGH GAS PRICES.

Don’t put all the blame on the big oil companies because they are NOT the ones making the big bucks, your government federal, state, local and city is making a KILLING off you…

So the next time you hear some nut case on TV complaining about the environment and big oil that is one of the nut cases directly responsible for HIGH gas prices. Also remember these environmental wackos are also responsible for why we DEPEND on oil from over seas since we can’t drill here in good ol’ America.

I can see these environmental wackos have done a good job of brain washing many Americans in believing that big oil is the cause for high prices. They couldn’t be further from the truth…

Just paid 2.04 for 93 here. $45 to fill up the tank and the low fuel light had just come on.

I do have to laugh at some of you getting on the environmentalists. Compare Los Angeles today versus 20 years ago. In the late 70's, the had over 100 Stage 1 alerts because of air polution. In the late 90's, it was around 12 Stage 1 alerts per year. This is while the population increased. Must be something in that gas blend magic you don't want to pay for.

There is a balance to be struck so we can drive our 12 MPG trucks down to the park and breath the air when we get there.

Really, Did you know that Exxon/Mobil was the most profitable company in the world ? Gas Taxes are the same regardless of gas being $1 or $5 a gallon. Besides those taxes are broken down and most of that money goes to offset all the roads and services related with driving a auto.

The 32 to 53 cent tax is nothing compared to the money that these oil companies and opec are making.

By all means Im no Tree hugger either but those bastards cant even pay their fines. Oil companies are very evil and they have us by the shorthairs.

I'd suggest to you that you live in a free market society. They do NOT control you unless you allow them too.

And, 01 XLT Sport I agree 100% I'm an engineer in Mototown and quite a number of things are a direct result of the actions from these wackos.

Sure it's a free market, but when there are very few players in a free market it's easy to control the costs and profits. Check this out for the free market. While many businesses are still trying to get themselves out from under the recession that we haven't been in, it appears the oil companies are maintaining a very healthy profitability:

I've bought gas for $1.91 here in Dallas in the last couple of days, but I've seen a few places around here where it's $2.07.
