Question about going from Kazaa to WinMx
Question about going from Kazaa to WinMx
I am getting away from Kazaa because of all the viruses it gives out. I've heard very good things about WinMx, does anyone else use that? My question is, I have like 500 songs and 100 video's and stuff downloaded on Kazaa. Before I delete that, is there a way I can take those songs and copy them or drag them to my music files in WinMX? Once I delete Kazaa, will I still be able to access the downloaded songs in my cd creator? Anyone else out there who has went from Kazaa to WinMx can you give me a hand? I am new to WinMx. Is there the playlist feature in Winmx? (there is a hot list, what's that?) Also, when I play the songs in Winmx, it opens windows media player, Kazaa just started playing them out of kazaa... Can I change that as an option? Its playing the song now as if it was a video...
My main concern is all those files I have downloaded under Kazaa, do I need to download them again under WinMx, or can I somehow drag them from the Kazaa file, and put them into the Winmx file? Thanks, Shane

I am going with the switch too. I've only been using winmx for the last half hour, and its kinda nice. Usually I have a hard time changing to something new, or getting used to it at first. But WinMx has a pretty simple set up. I just transfered my files from Kazaa to Winmx. I like this WinMx. Now I just have to figure out if there is a playlist feature like Kazaa. Thanks, Shane
One question I have about Winmx. When I download a song and it is complete. After the transfer stage, where does it go? I want to view all my downloaded songs... Is it shared files? Thanks, Shane
winmx dosent have a playlist feature that i know of and ive been using it for atleast 2 years your song go to your shared files that is the second tab and your folder is probly needs to be opened by clicking the plus sign beside the folder
Yeah I would get rid of Kazaa immediately as it is a crappy program. It has hidden programs that are constantly running and can broadcast stuff from your computer. Also the number of viruses that you can get from this program is amazing. I cannot see how anyone uses it cause it will make your computer start running like complete $%^$ after about a months use. Anyways....Winmx is a good program and is what I use as well. Never had a problem with it and it seems most songs are readily available. All your songs that you downloaded in Kazaa are stored in a file somewhere. I would use the search feature and type in .mp3 and it should find the folder with all the songs, probably somewhere in C:/program files/Kazaa or whatever folder kazaa is stored in. What I do is just make a music folder on the C: drive (i.e. C:/MP3) and save everything there. So then you can copy and paste all your .mp3's to this folder. Then you can go into winmx and look for the options tab. Under this you can change your shared folder and pick the folder that you just made and copied all your songs to. Now whenever you download something they will be saved here as well. Ok that was long winded...off to take a nap...

I've been using winmx for about 3 years now and think it's great. No spyware like in kazaa and I've had no virus problems at all. You should have a folder in 'my documents' that has all your downloads in it. If not, just make a new folder and transfer all of your downloads to it. My winmx folder is called 'my music' in 'my documents' and you can make separate folders so you can determine what downloads you have available to share and what downloads you want to keep private. I keep a limited amount available to share as having too many downloads showing in your available folder leaves you more liable to lawsuits. The RIAA is mostly going after people with many gigabytes showing on their share list.
thanks for the replies. I was able to copy the files over from Kazaa to Winmx before I deleted Kazaa.
Is there a program I can dowload to work along with WinMx that plays my songs seperately? I dont remember the name, but its something like WinAmp or something along those lines that plays songs... Can I set something like that up with WinMx? Thanks, Shane

you can run your downloads with mediaplayer or winamp or whatever...
you don't need to run winmx to listen to your songs. Just got to your folder and double click the song

I got winmx figured out, I love this thing. I just set up a playlist in winamp. I have about 50 songs, I reordered them, and svaed my playlist. My question is, Is there a way to expand the view on the list? I can only see like 4 songs at a time? How do I maximize it or resize it so it takes up the length of the screen? thanks, Shane

I use Kazaa Lite K++, as well as WinMX (K++ tends to have alot of newer songs, and just a wider range of music...MX has alot of the higher quality ones though...but the waits can be pretty bad on MX).
The way I have my mp3s set up is that I have a My Music folder that everything goes to...with subdirectories (my music -> band -> album -> songs), also within My Music I have a temp folder, which is where I have my P2P apps download to. It looks like this:
My Music
->Queens of the Stone Age
-> -> Songs for the Deaf
-> -> -> #1.mp3
-> -> -> #2.mp3
....
-> temp
After downloading I listen to them all the way through to make sure they are complete, right song, sounds good, etc etc. Then I move them to their proper folder.
But that's a hard setup to do if you have a large collection already.
In any case, you can tell WinMX to download to a specific directory (click the settings button, then go to File Transfers, then click "change" and set it to whichever directory you want).
For winamp: open winamp, then on the playlist editor, clcik the add button, then click add file (or if you want to add a whole folder, add folder). Then browse to your mp3 files (you said you moved them, so you should know what directory to point it to), and you just select them and click open. If you wish to add more than one, you can hold shift (selects an entire range), or hold ctrl and click individual files you want added.
Now you have them in your playlist, and you can play them. To save the playlist, click manage playlist (bottom of playlist editor, very right corner), and click save playlist, then save it where you want with the name you want.
Hope that helps
