Career Changes - Advice?
Career Changes - Advice?
I've been pondering the ever so pressing questions in the universe lately and have begun to realize that I'm not exactly happy in the line of work that I'm in...
With that in mind, can some of you all provide some guidance towards what the job market is doing these days? I'm interested in doing something in management as I feel I have the people skills necessary to perform such a task. The problem is availability seemingly.
I've searched careerbuilder and monster for positions in the past and have learned that, as a rule, it's really who you know that will make a difference on if you get a job or not. It's not that there's a lack of positions out there right now... quite the contrary actually. It's that there's a lack of positions that I see myself within and that pay somewhat decent.
Naturally, I want to make $450K / year and have a 4000 sq ft house but, the reality is that I know that won't happen any time soon barring that I don't hit the Lotto tonight (which I doubt will happen considering that I didn't buy a ticket).
In short, I'm in a rut. I'm, somewhat, willing to relocate. I want to make the same $ that I'm making now and be happy.
Advice, jokes, medication all welcomed.

I'm feeling for you bro.
Done the mid-life crisis, career change thing, only to find out that the carer change was a worse move for me.
Make sure that whatever you are thinking of going into is something you LOVE, otherwise it is not worth it.
I don't know what to tell you other than don't burn your bridges behind you, keep your options open, and look before you leap. (That's enough cliches for one sentence).

i'm currently jobless.. thats pretty fun.
keep in mind that it's no picnic!
i have to get up at the crack of noon (or later) and by the time i've watched movies & TV, surfed the internet & checked message boards, the sun is almost up & it's time for bed again...
it's a hard job, but somebody's gotta do it!

Well I guess I'm one of the few people who found a job that they really enjoy. The only thing is I don't see myself doing this for more than a couple years. I currently work for Adecco Technical out of the Cedar Rapids, IA office. I am currently contracted through them to John Deere Seeding Group in Silvis, IL. I go out on location (this time of year is usually McAllen, TX) and I either stay with some experimental parts that the farmer is running on his rig, and in that case I just fix it if it breaks and report any failures or changes in conditions. The other part is when we have our rigs running I usually run one of them and fix and report on things when they happen. Its kinda nice cause the equipment is usually pretty new (planters are prototypes usually). Just before I came back home for medical reasons I was running a new (10/1/03 delivered) John Deere 9220 4wd with a 1770NT 24row 30" row (60' wide) planter (it was a production runoff, meaning it was the 2nd one off the line). The sucky part of the job is at times it can be really stressful. Like the time we got 2 days to pack up a tractor, forklift, 60' planter, and find 3 loads of seed in a mixed up warehouse to ship from McAllen, TX to Aguila, AZ. I got the seed job so I had to try and find the right seed in the warehouse and then make sure it got on all the trucks along with the MSDS sheets. Since the whole time you're working you're on the road so I live out of a hotel most of the year. The fact that you're traveling so much is the reason I won't be doing this for more than a few years. Also the fact that the benefits that Adecco offers sucks at best (basically they don't even offer anything, but what they do you have to pay for). Then on top of all this when you're not on site you don't get paid, so when theres not any available contracts you're at home not getting paid (or when you're out on medical like I am now you don't get paid either). But when you do work the pay is pretty good. I worked it out and if I was able to work every day through the year it works out to about $45k/yr. Up until 2 weeks ago I had worked almost every single day. I'm kind of hoping that I get transfered over to Dubuque works because of all the backstabbing that goes on in seeding, but Dubuque is also the skidloader, backhoe, and bulldozer division and that stuff would be just flat out fun to test.

I was going to suggest that you move to Nevada and become a quality control inspector at the Mustang Ranch.
Then I remembered that the Feds took over management for back taxes and it proceeded to go under. Imagine that. The government can't even succeed at running a house of ill repute.

RP,
You haven't been married long, you haven't been in the new house long, new dog, new mower, etc. Let everything settle. The grass always appears greener on the other side of the fence. Everyone gets job anxiety several times in their careers.
Is there a better place to be in management than the company you work for right now? You are honing your people skills there, possibly the advancement opportunites would be better within that organization than(boy, sure hope I used that word correctly or Odin will be pissed.) making a new path for yourself elsewhere.
Plus, I don't have time to work on another relocation right now, I'm busy with Kobiashi...

I agree with seorta,
You're still relatively wet behind the ears as far as experience goes,it's too soon for a career change.
(I didn't say that to be a smart ***)
When I win the lotto, I will hire you you fix all my spelling mistakes, and correct my grammatical errors.
I'm kinda in the same boat, but I'm holding out for a management position.
Seriously bud, maybe it's winter cabin fever or whatever, grab the wife, and go take a 3 day trip somewhere, clear your head.

Well .... someone gave me great advice about careers . Which I took and like anything else there are the upsides as well as downsides.
The advice was.... "Think of the 2 things you like to do the most, pick the second one as a career and save the first one as a hobby/personal enjoyment because your career will have pitfalls and you may end up hating something you used to love"
Good Luck , just make your choice wisely.

As a geologist, the big bucks are with an oil company. I think you are doing remediation work now, isn't that correct? The politics surrounding that would drive me nuts. A lot of people talking about cleaning up the environment, and few dollars to actually go out and do it. (and it isn't all that easy, any way!)
My sister and brother in law were geologists at a major oil company and are currently independently wealthy (well, okay, my BIL was actually a high level manager there, which was really lucrative, of course...)
Oil companies have a huge profit margin, which means they have the green to take care of their best people. Go be one.
Good luck!

There is also NosePick and ButtPick but, that's a tough way to make a livin. (Personally, I never made a dime) If you are willing to relocate down south there is CottonPick. That's all I can think of, I'll have to set back chewing on this toothpick and ponder it some more.
