Angry I've about had it with digital cameras!

(Please don't let the lengthy text influence and/or intimidate your decision whether to read this or not.)

I have been to hell and back...

So I've got this Casio 4 megapixel digital camera. Minimum computer requirements are an OS 9 (for Macs, which I have), and I have that on the laptop. The laptop is pretty sucky for memory, though.

The camera came with Kodak software, so I installed that on the laptop, and the iMac, (which is an 8.6). It works on both, except the 8.6 needs some 'Casio software' so it can't upload the digital pictures, like it can on the 9.0. (I knew it probably wouldn't work on the 8.6, but I gave it a try anyway )

Well, after trial and error, try, after try, after try, after TRY, and after allocating more memory to some of the applications on the laptop (or so I thought...), turning ON virtual memory, somehow, someway, it worked. The Kodak software loaded, bringing up the snapshots from the digital camera. (The software allows you to send your pictures online, or to crop/resize/rotate, etc.) Without the software, I couldn't make alises of the pictures, because the Casio USB cord was needed.

Well, I have the picture I wish to transfer online to a friend, using the Kodak software, right? Have it all set. It then says that an internet connection could not be established. I double click on Netscape, (Please don't tell me to download the latest IE, the laptop won't accept it, it is sooo bad on memory), and the homepage cannot be found.

I check on the little internet receiver (which is supposed to be lit with green lights) and nothing is on. I double check no cords are loose, etc. Still nothing. So I restart the laptop. THEN the lights come back on.

By the way, the laptop only comes with ONE USB port, and I think that has to do with the internet? So I took out the one that was there, and inserted the digital camera USB cord. It still couldn't get a connection. When I removed the original USB cord, the light went off. But there's no way I could insert the digital camera cord if the USB one is 'reserved' and 'necessary'?

I'm not sure what would happen if I restarted the laptop again, and tried to get on the internet, because I got so frustrated I just shut it down.

I'm a DSL user, and the laptop and other computer are set up for the internet. The iMac's internet worked fine, but somehow the laptop is having a hard time. The iMac has TWO USB ports, one for the keyboard, and one for the internet I believe. I plugged the digital camera USB plug into the slot for the keyboard, and the mouse wouldn't move, so I undid that. It doesn't work anyway on the iMac, just on the laptop (OS 9.0)

I am just having a real hard time with this. I have tried pretty much all I could think of. I even thought of inserting a CD into the laptop, and dragging the picture files, (yes, they saved to the desktop from the Kodak software), to the CD folder, but it says the CD is "locked." I haven't tried a blank CD though, would they work? (I have none though). I also don't have any sort of floppy disk thingamajiggie.

I was thinking, if only I could transfer the pictures from the laptop to the iMac, because the other computer has much more memory, it would be better. And I could just use the laptop for uploading the pics. I'm about worn out. I think I covered everything.

ANY help is appreciated. THANKS

Edit: No internet connection established, even after restarting it.

If you are using the USB hub to connect to the internet AND you want to use other USB functions (i.e. Camera) at the same time, to need to get a USB hub.
This is basically 4 way adapter cord for the USB port
I am using my old laptop as my home computer and it has 3 USB ports. One of these has a mini-hub plugged in and now has 4 things plugged into one port.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, it sure does help. How much are they? Can they be used for Macs too? (Somehow Macs seem to get singled out a lot )

I wonder what will solve the internet problem?

Looks like they start at 19.99 at radio shack.

You can check their website for prices and specs on them.

I believe Adam and Red are cprrect.

My wife has multiple sewing/surger and whatever machines that require a PC connection to access the files of the manufacturer of the machines if she wants more stuff to choose from than comes on the CDs that are part of the original package. Additional CDs are from $50 to $90 each so this is the way to go.

Her office PC is upstairs and it is a pain to move stuff around so I purchased a used laptop for not too much money but it only had one USB port so we had to constantly move cords around. Yesterday I purchased a 4 port USB hub from Office Max for the same $19 mentioned by the others and we are good to go and she can run just about as many machines as she wants and also have access to our DSL setup.

For under $20 I think it is worth a try.

Let me start by saying that USB is Universal Serial Bus, thus USB will work with PC or MAC. If you get a USB hub, make sure you get one that supports USB 2.0. You may not need it now, but if you upgrade your machines in the future, you are not going to want to back down to the opriginal USB speeds. I am confused however on how the USB has anything to do with your internet connection. Unless you are using wireless with a USB attached connector, your intenet connection should be through you network port (large phone cord looking port).

Tell me how you are connected to the DSL. For example, I have all my machines connected to a Linksys Switch/Firewall/Router which is connected to the DSL modem, which is connected to the phone jack. This also allows for all of the machines connected to the switch to be on the same "Network". This allows me the capability of transfering files from one machine to the other over the Network. I have not worked on a MAC in about 8 years, but I remember them being very easy to network and share files. If you are set up in a similar manner, you shoud be able to network the machines and transfer (share) the files from the laptop to the iMac.

By the 2.0, do you mean 2.0 as in 2 Mbps? I looked it up on http://www.apple.com/usb/ and above the 2Mbps it says Serial/Geoport. Is that what you're talking about?

Sounds like a surefire way to correct the problem to me!

I've owned three Sony cameras and have bought multiple cameras for work... all sony. Never a single problem.

Thumbs up

You can, or could, d/l updates from the apple support site for free. Doing these in succession would bring the Imac up to at least 9.2.?? It would probably then have a driver which could upload the pics to the desktop? With that fast of a connection you could be done in about 45 minutes, minus whatever time it took to install and restart after each one? I did that on my wifes 366 ibook last August. I can try to find the update links for each step for you? You can't simply d/l the latest one for some reason, has to go from oldest to newest, in order. Lemme go see what I can find??,,,,98

On the laptop, a hub will probably solve your problem. "I hope"

Exclamation

Here's a page showing what OS's can be used on what computers? I could not find anything really about going from 8.6 to 9.0, which is where the updates on the support site start? Have you ever run the software update on the Imac, to see what's available? If not, it may be a mile long list of missed updates,,,,98
