Cleaning out old computer?

Hi ...I have my new computer up and running and was wondering how hard is it to wipe clean my old one? I have an old Dell dimension xps T600 ...I want to completely clean out the old hard drive and do a fresh install of windows 98..I'm sure there's some stuff screwed up from installing/uninstalling programs over the years...I plan on giving my old computer to my Mother..All she needs it for is typing up stuff and the internet.....I only have the old discs from when I bought it back in 99 so there's no updates on the install disks...I'm not the best with computers ...I can use them pretty well but have never changed around files ,or formated a drive?! Would it just be easier to take it to Comp U.S.A.'s service dept.?

Ok, you're gonna want to make a boot disk.

Then start up using the boot disk, and when you're at the command prompt type in "Format C:" without quotes.

It'll format the C drive. Then you're gonna want to reinstall windows 98. After 98 is installed, run the defrag on it.

Hope that helps. Ask away if you need anymore help.

BTW, I think in 98 you create a boot disk by going to control panel -> add/remove programs -> and it should be in there somewhere...I cant remember.

Or maybe it is under the format options (format a floppy, there might be a checkbox in there...)

its in the format section.

Insert the blank disk into the drive. Open up my computer. Right click on the A drive, select format. Then check the "Creat Boot Disk" and select start.

Just use your old restore disks, they will format the drive for you and reinstall everything you need. You will have to udgrade your drivers anyhow. Using the restore disks will make it much simpler if your not comfortable using the above mentioned ways.

Well, you need to make sure you have CD ROM drivers on that boot disk, otherwise you won't be able to read the install CD once you format the drive...

Joe is using the Amish virus over the internet.

You get a letter in your mailbox from an Amish virus maker-

Please open C: drive and hit ctrl - A and hit delete all.

Thank you, Your Amish friends.

Whenever I use to install windows 98 on a persons computer. I would format the drive and then copy the windows 98 cab folders into a directory I had made on the hard drive. That way it would install quicker plus it would never ask you to please reinsert the windows 98 disk. The files would already be there. That is the best way to install windows 98. If you ever need a bootdisk for an operating system. Just go to bootdisk.com. They have saved me a bunch of times. Oh yea for you guys that believe that the hard drive data is gone when it is formatted. It doesn't work that way. You can format a hard drive till you are blue in the face and data can still be recovered.

You gotta load the driver for your video card. Windows does not have the driver in it database. No surprise.... Do you know what type of video card is in the computer. If so go to the manufacturers website and download the driver. List the video card name here or computer model number and I will help you get the driver.

http://support.dell.com/filelib/Devi...T_P03_XPS_T___ It will probably say in the manual what kinda video card you have. They came out with more than one video card for that model computer.
