"The 2004 Saturn VUE—the first General Motors Corp. vehicle to be offered with a Honda-built engine—is more "American" than the 2003 VUE that doesn't have the Honda engine. What? How can this be?"

this issue is a joke. yes the Honda engine is ASSEMBLED in the US. But with a quantity of Japanese parts.
Where exactly is the count taken for domestic vs foreign?
Do we include the Saudi sourced gas in the tank as foreign? or domestic because it was refined here?
Its all a joke.

I think that when its all said and done, when all the labor force is paid, when the taxes are paid, when the suppliers are paid, when the cost of goods and manufacturing are all taken care of...WHERE DOES THE PROFIT GO? Does it stay here, or go overseas? Does a US owned company make money, or is it a Japanese of German company that reaps the profits? Sorry Honda-lovers...I don't care if they assemble them across the street, I would rather have my dollars go to an American company.
I don't care if Ford may get some electronics from Japan, some tires from a French (ugh) company, the steel from off-shore, a trans now and then from Mazda of ZF, or even if they assemble them in Mexico or Canada. Thats only smart business. They are designed here, and the profits support an American company.
Keep buying Japanese, and someday there won't be any more American owned companies.

I guess as long as YOU don't lose your job to the manufacturing plants overseas, its OK, huh ??
MROLDV8 is right: If people keep this trend up of buying everything from foreign companies, where are Americans going to work ??
Why do you think Japan has such stringent import laws ? Their population would definitely buy American products. (Levi jeans and Harley Davidson motorcycles are proof of that) But, their government is smart enough to realize that the Japanese companies need their own country's business as well, so they severely limit the amount of imported goods allowed for sale in Japan.
Of course, since most people in this country are so indoctrinated on buying everything solely on price, manufacturers are forced to comply by using cheaper parts, labor, etc.
It's our own fault though. Since no one teaches REAL economics in our schools, most people are ignorant as to what the driving factors in our economy are.
Oh well, I do what I can to patronize US companies.

I don't have a manufacturing job so I guess that may be part of why I think the way I do. But I am a similar situation, as there are people in India doing my line of work for about 1/4 the cost of me. Guess what; I'll have to find something else to do to make money. The US is good at making money. We find new, better, faster cheaper ways to make money. Innovation. I don't agree with subsidizing subpar products or overpaying for similar products regardless of who makes it. Do you want to know what drives companies, especially US ones? the bottom line. If people start buying competitors' products, the first company will learn why and change to get more competitive. Again, we all win in the end, consumers and companies. But people that patronize an inferior product knowing there are better ones, prove that the company doesn't need to do anything to improve. What is the difference if the competition is within our country? What if buying from a company that is in another state vs. your home town? Your neighbor may lose his job, but he is a good worker and citizen. Anyway, I tihnk we have a global economy and competition is good for an economy. Many people differ in opinions. Vote with your dollars and I'll vote with mine. JMHO.

I only buy Fords (or their subsidiaries) since I like the fact that my hubby works (for ford) to help support our habits (racing Fords). I'm slowly converting all of my family back to Fords via hubby's A-plans.
