She hates ford??? I would probably leave her just because of that. Rethink the whole new car thing for her.

You could get her a Mazda, as long as you don't tell her it's 42% Ford.

Being that I currently own an '02 Maxima, I can say this car has a lot for the money. I'm getting an L soon simply b/c I need a truck and that's the only one I'm willing to consider getting. I've had no problems with my max and I drive it like I stole it 100% of the time. I ran a 14.6 in the 1/4 bone stock and I have an auto. I think the '04 model is kinda ugly but if I were to buy another sedan, I'd have to go with another max. I'm telling you, there's something about these cars, they're different than other sedans (Camry, Taurus,ect...) and it's not just the power. Go over to maxima.org to get more info. But don't expect Nissan to be much better than Ford when it comes to warranty work. The rare occasions something does go wrong, the dealership looks EVERYWHERE for a mod.

BTW, when these Japanese companies get the money, most of it is reinvested in other American companies. People would be surprised at how much money American car companies invest in Japanese (and other countries) electronic companies and the like. All in all the playing field is pretty even when it comes to where the money FINALLY goes. We gotta always support the workers in the US that build the cars though.
