So does than mean he only cheated in 1 of 77
I mean, would you bring more than ONE illegal bat to the stadium at a time?
Sammy, you let me down BIG time

I thought I read on MLB.com or ESPN.com I forget which, that he had between 400 and 500 other bats..?

Anyhow that's really good news!

One of the ubiquitous sports talk show guys today suggested that even if MLB did find cork in every one of the remainder of his bats, they wouldn't say so, for the negative mark it would put on the entire sport. Food for thought...

First thing I thought, though, was "If he accidentally brought a corked bat in this time, what's the odds he's done it before, even during the home run contests in '98?"

Let's hope he didn't use it during the Home Run Derby in the Allstar game! It's all themore likely he;d use it now though, cause he's just gotten back from an injury and he's not been hitting homers as much this season, only 5....

And btw Fast Gator, the players keep their bats in their lockers in the stadium and so if he wanted to use an ilegal bat he'd have to have it in the stadium.

They should change the rules now NO personal bats. They don't need personal bats. Just have 10 or so diffferent type of bats for them to choose from.

That makes sense to me, Pichers don't have personal baseballs, nor does Quarterbacks have personal footballs, so why should batters have personal bats????

Wrong 01 XLT!

Players vary in height, strength etc. Each player also can hit better with certain bats and each player lieks to have their certain grip etc some like pine tar on it others don't etc.. That plan just dosen't make sense at all.. plus some hitters like thinner handles than others, some like big ***** on the end (like Sammy Sosa does) others like small *****, some batters need short bats in order to be able to handle the weight (for smaller contact hitters) power hitters might like a large barrel or somthing like that...

Agreed? I think you ought to see now how hard that would be on everybody etc.

Pitchers don't have their own ***** for the reasons 1: Pitchers can modify the ball ilegally and make it do weird stuff and they can also get a heavier ball or a lighter ball which is also ilegal and so in order to keep from that the umps take charge of them.

Oh and another addition is that they go through over 50 ***** per game.

Make sense?? Yep.

Plus remember that the more a bat is used the weaker it'd get so you'd have many more broken and chipped bats in a game making it harder on the other players.

With all do respect NOPE it makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Players should NOT have their own bats. The park can have say 20 bats on hand and the players just DEAL with it, no problem. If they "truly" are good hitters they will learn how to adapt, just like basketball players do, football players and just about any other sport, except golf, has to deal with the "offical" equipment they are given to play with.

I see no reason for "personal" bats, it just dosen't add up. So what about grip, weight etc. No one else gets to have their equipment altered to fit thier "childish" needs. Sorry that's just how I feel about baseball, at least the Major leage, a lot, not all, but alot of whinny *** babys, "We're not making enough money, we don't want to play in the rain, we want our very own CORKED bats to cheat with"

However, I will let the bat thing go and let them have thier own bats if the pichers can bring their own baseballs to the game, hell that would be interesting, seeing someone with a corked bat hit a baseball that has some grease or something else on it...

Let me ask you one question first: Have you ever played baseball?

If you have then you should know how important it is. Remember Baseball palyers vary from David Eckstein on the Angels who is 5'6" to Ryan Anderson with the Marienrs who is 6'11"

I don't think David would like to swing a bat as big as Ryan... Plus all the hand sizes are different.

Sammy screwed up, and he should most assuredly pay a penalty (suspension, $$$ fine, both, whatever). I too feel he let the fans down bigtime. I don't however think he should be deported (as was suggested in another post) for his lack of good judgement. But let's face it, when it comes to HR's, with Sammy's swing, you could give him a broomstick and he'd probably get 370 feet out of it! He doesn't need a corked bat to hit HR's, which makes it all the more confusing as to why he'd use it and run the risk of getting caught.

Like RockPick mentioned, I to have played this game all my life right up through college (missed getting a division 2 World Series ring by one year ), and it holds a special place in my heart. Given some of the horrible things that other professional athletes have done over the past few years, I really think that Sammy should make a public apology to the fans and respectfully take whatever punishment is leveled against him.

I agree with BigDeal. He should admit the bat was corked and serve his punishment, and then let it go. Since all the other bats were found to not be corked, then I wouldn't go so far as to say that he should be deported or banned. I saw on Sportscenter on ESPN that a corked bat only makes the ball go 1.1%(I think it was) farther. They said that a 400 foot homerun would probably only go about 404-405 feet with a corked bat. So it is not like he is gaining an edge or anything, because he has already proved that he can hit the ball that far anyways.

Since he was actually caught using the corked bat, maybe give him a large fine or 7-10 suspension or something like that. Now if he was allegedly using a corked bat and they found one, but he hasn't used it, then I could see not getting as big of a penalty.

He was caught doing something wrong and he needs to pay the price.

I agree a substatial Fine and short suspension is all thats really necesssary in this case. Sosa has been a huge supporter of humanitarian causes here and in his home country. His demeanor on and off of the field has been exemplary which should count for something given the current crop of selfish crybabies in proffessional sports today.

Players should have their own bats but the teams should be held partialy responsible if they are juiced. For instance the players could buy their bats through the teams they play for. Then the teams could monitor or test the bats at purchase. If the team was responsible for storing the bats during the season they would be less likely to be altered.
