Grass Now Legal in Canada
Well, since the new court ruling, I thought I would kick back and celebrate with a little puff...

by Dana Larsen and Reverend Damuzi (16 May, 2003) Appeal Court judge rules that Canada's pot-possession laws are void.
Now legal in Ontario
Marijuana advocates across Canada are celebrating a May 16 Ontario court decision, which effectively legalized possession in Canada's largest province.
On Friday, May 16, Ontario Summary Conviction Appeal Court Justice Steve Rogin upheld the lower court ruling of Justice Philips, concerning a case of pot possession in Ontario.
Justice Rogin agreed that the federal government had failed in its obligation to change the law to allow for medical use of marijuana, and so the entire law was void.
This decision is binding on Ontario's lower courts, which means that no-one can be convicted of pot possession in Ontario. This effectively means that marijuana is now legal in Canada's largest province.
It is expected that other Appeal courts across Canada will also ratify the decision. Related cases are making their way through the courts in at least four other provinces.
The federal government has appealed the case to Ontario's Court of Appeal. The next step would be to Ontario's Supreme Court.
The "decrim" legislation being contemplated by Canada's Liberal government will presumably be aimed at filling this void in Canada's pot laws.
Marijuana advocates are encouraging pot smokers in Ontario to enjoy their new-found freedom. "The people of Ontario should be celebrating this monumental victory!" said Marc Emery of the BC Marijuana party. "Anywhere you can smoke tobacco, they should be smoking marijuana."

It amazes me that in the US people are so against the pot but are ok with tabacco and alcohol. I think tabacco is far more addictive and alcohol impairs more. I don't think all "drugs" should be legal. Coke, meth, heroin, ect. should deffinitley not be legal but I think that pot could work. They could tax the he!! out of it. Make it availible to thoes over 21. Maybe even 25. Make the DWI penelties harsh.
I'm not going to hold my breath waiting to see it leagal here in the states. I don't think it's fair that people who are responsible pot smokers are catigorized with the junkies and criminals.
Habibi, maybe you should open a bed and breakfast (wake and bake
). I could probably be talked into spending a long weekend up there.
Smoke responsibly!

Canada being the socialistic nation that it is...this does not surprise me in the least.
So long, Canada, as you continue your slide to internal collapse.

runnert, you make me laugh.
The recent decriminalization laws regarding possession will accelerate an "Internal collapse"? HAHAHA
Utterly ridiculous!
If either of our countries will face any sort of internal collapse, I think we can thank the greedy and corrupt politicians, not the pot smokers.
I'm not an expert on statistics, but I would hazard to guess that the number of pot smokers on either side of our borders would be proportionally the same. (per capita)
Now I always enjoy a good debate based on facts, so if you can show me how your statement has validity, I would love to hear it.
The fact is that people will continue to smoke weed whether it's legal or not.
IMHO, decriminalization is a dynamic step in the right direction. This will free up the courts, lawyers, and jails from petty bs charges, and let them focus more on the real criminals.
I have spent the better part of my life working with violent criminals, and I can tell you that I have never witnessed someone get violent from smoking pot; on the contrary.
Alcohol and hard drugs can turn people into monsters, and motivate them to do the most violent despicable acts.
It seems like the Holland model has enjoyed some good success with their philosophy on the subject, and I think we can learn from them.
Personally, I think legalization for small amounts for personal use is the right step.
Maybe I'm wrong, who knows?
If I had all the answers, I'd be rich!

Well I won't be quoting any statistics for you (except what I have heard) and I am not the greatest speaker. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and I can tell you whn your bridge is going to collapse (by the way, thank God for friction) and the amount of time I spend on what drugs do to the person is none of my concern (TBH I could care less). I do listen to talk radio and when the subject for legalizing pot comes up, you can always tell which caller who wants the drug legalized does drugs - they couldn't complete a sentence if they tried.
What I have heard is that people like myself who drink beer have less tendency to go off and do hard drugs. But people who are doing pot have a higher probability to venture off into more harder drugs.
I could really care less how many people on either side of the border smoke pot. All I know is that pot destroys the body much faster. And the point I am making about Canada and their socalistic government is that the more people smoking pot (and the number of users will increase if it is legalized) the more people will be wanting more of a high pot gets them and they will move onto harder drugs. And the more people doing harder drugs the more worthless people there will be and then the governement (because it is the nature of socialism) will step in to fund all the rehab/medical/you name it extra espenses to maintain these sorry people.
So in a nut shell, I really don't care that people smoke pot or whatever. If their lives are so empty that they need to do this crap, then so be it. But it will make your government much bigger and you will be responsible for the extra cost. Thus increasing the rate of the internal destruction.

So you're not going to stop inhaling on a legality issue eh?
IMO I don't think it's that people are against weed, it's that gov't hasn't figured out a way they can regulate and tax weed. So therefore they tell everyone it's really really bad, and the un-educated listen.
I've seen people do some pretty stupid ***** while high.
But in a few of the cases the people were just idiots to begin with.
But in a few of the cases the people were just idiots to begin with.
It's a moot point here in the US. It won't be legal in my life time. We will only be told how bad pot is and how it's the gateway drug. There will be no regulation so kids will continue to have an easy time getting their hands on it. There will continue to be people that believe that it's ok for them to have their beer but it's not ok for people to smoke pot, because it'll make them an idiot. We won't see the people who use pot responsibly because they know they will be labled a junkie and criminal. The responsible people who think pot should be legal will continue to sit in a shroud of silence, while the kids and irresposible people rally.
In a country where there are so many bad things avalible to us all (tabacco, alcohol, fast food, medicines, the list could go on and on), I don't think that a natural, unprocessed subtance like pot is even close to being the evil that it is portrayed as.
runnert, I have read your post twice, and am thankful that we can hold a debate online in a mature and responsible fashion.
""I do listen to talk radio and when the subject for legalizing pot comes up, you can always tell which caller who wants the drug legalized does drugs - they couldn't complete a sentence if they tried""
... those people will always be stupid, whether they smoke pot, drink beer, or abstain altogether. I don't believe pot made them stupid, they were stupid already.
...There are people in the highest level of power in our societies who smoke socially, and if you knew who they were, you would probable ***** yourself.
"" What I have heard is that people like myself who drink beer have less tendency to go off and do hard drugs. But people who are doing pot have a higher probability to venture off into more harder drugs""
...I agree with you here to a point.
From personal life experience, I believe it's the younger kids who use pot as a gateway drug, and then venture off to try harder stuff.
Us older guys just like to kick back with a bud once in a while, and take it easy.
Alcohol can also mess up peoples lives and make them worthless (not a contributing member to society)
"" All I know is that pot destroys the body much faster.""
...I don't believe the above statement. Moderation is the key word here, and when any substance is abused, negative consequences will occur.
"" And the point I am making about Canada and their socalistic government is that the more people smoking pot (and the number of users will increase if it is legalized) the more people will be wanting more of a high pot gets them and they will move onto harder drugs. ...There's an awful lot of assumptions made in the above paragraph, and while I don't agree that the following things will happen, I can see your point of view and understand how you got there.
Remember, there's no shortage of worthless people in our countries, some people will be losers regardless if they are substance abusers or not.
There comes a time when each of us has to take responsibility for our actions, if a few people get hooked on pot because of the new law, then I don't think it's fair to blame the new policy.
When Ontario opened casinos throughout the province, many critics cried about increased organized crime, prostitution, people losing their homes, the list goes on.
The fact remains that if someone loses their pay-cheque because they don't know when to quit, then it's their problem.
Yes, if some junkies get hooked and develop extra health problems, then we will all end up paying more taxes.
I've enjoyed the discussion, and I'm curious to see how things unfold.
Times are changing, and we have to change with it. Progress is a wonderful thing.

Pot, well I have always had mixed feeling on the subject of pot and it being legal. I will say in my own personal opinion I do not think pot is any more or any less a contributing factor to someone being an “idiot” In fact it may make some “idiots” look better after a few puffs…
All kidding aside I do have a problem with some groups, at least here in America, that are running around wanting to make it legal and here is why.
It is usually these types of groups, usually consisting of the social liberal types that will try to sale the public on why it is ok for pot to be legal. However these same groups run around wanting to make fast food illegal, or make it taste like crap (no animal fat for cooking fries, taking the good butter out of movie theaters etc) all in the name that “it hurt’s people” code words for “the public is to STUPID to know what is good for them”. These groups think it is just EVIL for us cigarette smokers to have a smoke when we feel like it, so long as it is not disturbing someone. I can go along with that, when it was allowed in restaurants I never usually smoked out of courtesy unless there were only a few people in there and they were smoking then I figured it was ok.
These same groups also think drinking is EVIL however have no ***** to go after that since the majority of the public drinks in one form or another. Now with these beliefs these groups also do NOT think the individual should have any personal responsibility. If the evil drinker happens to kill an innocent person while driving drunk it can NOT be the drunks fault, it’s the bars fault for serving them, or the beer manufacture, etc you see where I am going with that.
Here is my take on it. I do NOT have any problem with those that drink, or if they wish to drink and get totally blasted. I do not have a problem with smokers, I do not have problem with fast food tasting good, I want all the crap in there because if I am spending good money for a Big Mac and fries I want them to taste good, so very good I just know its doing damage to me…
I would not have any problems for those of legal age who wish to smoke pot WHEN AND ONLY WHEN personal responsibility is brought back to the forefront. Until personal responsibility is at the forefront and people are held accountable for their actions then pot should NOT be legal, nor should beer, alcohol, cigarettes or anything else someone can use to sue a big money making corporation for a wind fall, or to use as a self defense against assuming personal responsibility. Sometimes drunks get away with it “I was so drunk I did not know what I was doing” BS, it does not matter if someone was so drunk they did not know what they did. The point is BEFORE they drank they KNEW what can happen if they drink too much therefore they are RESPONSIBLE.
Same for legal pot use, if it was made legal now it will never work, not in a hundred years and at this time I do NOT want it legal. The reason is I am tired of sending my hard earned money to my government for ill-responsible idiots (not just pot smokers) any one that is never held accountable for their actions, but yet taken care of and being babysat by the government.
