Painting Garage Floor - Need advise

I'm looking to paint my garage floor soon..

Background - My house is 14 years old (I bought it last year), and it appears that the concrete slab floor was not touched..

Step 1 is to obviously clean the floor, which I will follow the directions of whichever product I decide to use in Step 2..

Step 2 - what kinda paint to use? My original plan was to use the typical concrete floor paint.. My dad has been using this stuff for years.. It requires repainting every 4-5 years due to hot tires pulling up paint, etc.. But it's cheap and relatively easy..

However, I've been looking into garage floor 2-part epoxy paint (like http://www.armorpoxy.com/ or http://www.epoxyshield.com/ or http://www.nationalpaintsupply.com).. Obviously more expensive (~$55/gal), but seems to be better suited for vehicle use..

What are the thoughts out there? Is the extra cost worth it? Will it ever need to be redone again? Does the epoxy paint withstand the pressures of cooling tires? Is it easier to slip on epoxy paint than regular concrete floor paint..

Any advice is appreciated..

Thanks!

The 2-part epoxy works really good. Make sure you followthe directions on the can (preparation and application). I had a neighbor back in the States who used it and it turned out great. I can't attest to the durability, I had to move about a year later, but it still looked good at that time.

USE THE 2-part Epoxy!!

I bought a brand new house in 97 and made the mistake of using that 'garage floor paint'. It looked... so-so and chipped and peeled within 2 years at most. It was basically crap.

the epoxy looks as good as it lasts! GREAT stuff

This is definately a case of: "you get what you pay for"

My landlord painted my garage floor before I moved in. I've been there about 8 months now, and there are tracks where the paint has been pulled up from my tires... I've heard good things about the epoxy, and when I own my own place I'll be using it...

Lt grey.
I bought an old house and jack hammered the basement floor up. Then ran new plastic waste pipe thru out the house and added a bathroom in the basement, washer hook-up, slop sink and a drain for a hot tub. Just waiting for the cool weather to quit so I can float a coating over the entire basement floor to form a seal without the pilot light on the furance burning down the house

My garage was a single truck, so it was a piece of cake

Gator that is nice but a tad on the pricey side. I may have to push my plans back a few months now ...

I heard the Beahr stuff sucks, so avoid that since there is much better and more out there. Here is also some good info:

You need to etch the floor first with a mild acid and the finish you put down will last much much longer...

I painted my garage last summer. I used rust-oleum's new two part epoxy kit.

http://www.rustoleum.com/brand.asp?f...nd_id=19&SBL=1

So after a winter of parking the truck, that brings in a ton of sand with it, it has worked great. It was something like $60.00 at Home Depot. I did not use the supplied flakes.

The key is the prep work:
wet the floor and scrub with a cleaner/degreaser
POWER WASH
wet the floor and scrub with a cleaner/degreaser
POWER WASH
POWER WASH
and oh yea
POWER WASH

It is soooo nice just wiping up oil spills and sweeping is effortless. There are a lot of products out there that claim to be an epoxy but are not (Behr is one). If there is not a separate can to mix with the paint, it is NOT an epoxy.
