Talking Does your state ban cell ph use while driving?

NC is considering it (unless it's hands free). What's next?
Swapping in-dash CDs?
Talking to someone else in the car?
Eating and drinking in your vehicle?
Applying lipstick?
Changing radio stations?
Looking out the side windows?
Lighting or smoking cigarettes?

Oh...it would only carry a $25 fine with no points, so it has no teeth anyway.

I say running into people should be against the law. If you don't do that, who's your cell phone hurting?

P.S. You can drive bare foot, but not wearing thongs. How do you like that? I can't see how a thong would interfere with driving ability. I won't try it either.

They brought it up here in Mi. No luck though. The best is watchin' a wreckless a-hole like myself try to "text message" while driving. Whoa baby...thats a rough one. Ya gotta stare at the phones screen..half the time Im doing something other than looking at the road. If there is a honey next to me or in my rear-view...forget it...look out 'cause Im driving via osmosis baby!

It is still legal here in FL, however, we are now tracking "driver distractions" on accident reports. Cell phone use is one of them. I wouldn't be at all suprised if many states start to limit the use somewhat.

Fines for using your cell phone WTF?

We should have the ability to fine passengers for passing gas while driving down the freeway/turnpike, now that is a distraction…

Boy I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one, but here goes anyway.

Personally I think we (the USA) should implement a driver qualification / training program similar to that in effect in Germany. No 15 or 16 year olds on the road by themselves, they can't qualify for a licence until 18. Even at 18 they have to have completed a certain number of driving miles (both daytime and at night) with a licensed driver, and have been able to pass a rigorous written exam. Then after meeting these qualifications it costs approximately $2,000 US to purchase a license. Re-qualification is also part of the program and occurs on a pre-defined basis. What you get out of a program like this is far fewer accidents per 1,000 cars even considering the autobahn in the equation, which in the end is what I think everyone would like to see occur.

Of course I know this will never happen, but it would be nice not to be run into the weeds a couple times a day by people who have never been formally taught how to operate a vehicle. And before any of you ask, I'm 40 years old and a graduate of the Skip Barber Racing school (boy was that fun as well as informative!) so yes, I treat myself as having been formally trained.

Go ahead, flame away gentlemen............

if you can't pat your stomach and rub your head at the same time then you can't qualify to talk on a phone while driving...or is it the other way around?

OK is fixing to I think.

I was driving down the road on the Phone yeasterday and a cop pulled out in front of me trying to merge way late, he didn't care though cuz it was his fault and not my belly patting head rubbing cell phone self.

Can you rotate each hand in a circle in opposite dirrections at the same time?

No flame from me BigDeal, I agree and also think this should apply to motorcycles.

I wish CA. would ban Cell Phones while driving unless they're totally hands free.

I agree somewhat with BigDeal, except for the cost. I am all for a graduated license system, where the younger drivers must complete real hours behind the wheel with a competent licensed driver.

I don't however agree with the cost. We get raped bad enough on insurance costs, can you imagine trying to front a $2000 or more fee to get your license when you are 18? I know that when I was a freshman in college, I didn't have enough money to buy Ramen Noodles, much less a license.

Also, I am all for "professional" driver school, and not this joke we call drivers eduation in High School.

Thumbs up

Illegal here, $120 fine, only handsfree allowed.
Even if your caught holding a cellphone and you are not calling, means a ticket.
We don't have a point system here.

You have to be 18 here to drive a car.
Back in 1982 it took me 19 lessons of 90 minutes each to get my driver license.
I guess it was $30 a lesson back then.
It cost a lot more these days.

Pretty sure it is illegal in Virginia, not 100% sure on that, though.

I know I'll get flamed, but............

Whats so hard to pull over if you want to talk on the friggin phone? Hands free or not, from my prespective, hands free drivers are still all over the road and riding the brakes.
And btw, their hands are waving madly while talking.

Cell phones should be equipped with a ignition cut-off so the car will not run while the phone is on.

O Boy, bet Iam gona get it now
