Angry Horsepower

I am a man who loves diesel. The lifetime of the engine is fantastic, and the power it puts out is awesome. But we all know the gas mileage stinks .

I have heard a lot of good things about diesel. But what is up with the horsepower. I mean, diesel will put out 800 pound/feet of torque but only give 300 horsepower? I perfer both to be equal sometimes. But what are you opinions? Diesel take-off could be improved but tell me what you know!

Yes, I understand about that. Diesel seems to burn so quickly that its generates a lot of torque. Diesel has a lot of power output, and I appreciate that. And there are a lot of things that a person could do to enhance a Diesel engine. Not only get more torque but shove a little more horsepower out of it.

Powerstroke diesel is the thing.

Not true of all Diesel trucks. Maybe Ford's, but my Dad's 93 Dodge with the Cummings I-6 gets 19mpg in general.
A light day his truck scales at 8,600#. Gets that millage up to 10,500#. It is never empty.
Yes he redid the suspension on the starting platform of a 250.
All this and it has 98K miles on it. be careful of generalizations.
And before you call it a piece of $h!t Dodge, the only problem he has had with it is the steering box leaking fluid. NOTHING else !

BTW AUTO tranny, never a glitch in towing, and it gets up and out of its way just fine.
When he is hauling large commerical panel sets ( electrican ) he hooks up a 7.5' x 16' tandem axel Wells Cargo trailer, and it pulls that weight just fine with the truck weight.
No need for a manual for the towning capacity.

I heard that the new Chevys are putting out the best Diesel gas mileage. An estimated 23mpg going downhill, and towing nothing ! No, I do not think your Dodge is crap. That sounds like a reliable truck with good towing.

I have a friend who owns an F250 4x4 Diesel (Automatic), and he told me the range on it stinks but it drives better than a car. The last time I drove a 250 is when I was testing a manual transmission last year, and it felt so intense. But the initial take-off did suck a lot. I felt like I was left standing when everyone else took off on the road. Either way I love diesel .

If you don't like the horsepower on the ford 7.3 then you should look at some aftermarket stuff. aFe air intake, Edge ez fueling box. We just made some mods to my boss' 2000 dodge and it REALLY helped fuel economy. We got all the stuff from www.smokindiesel.com those guys really know whats going on. Check them out.

Hp is a product of RPM. That's why the hp seems low compared to the tq. Diesels run at a lower rpm than gassers. My red line is 3400.

BTW I get 19 to 21 mpg in my '97 PSD, and last night I ran the 1/4 in 14.37 @ 102.74 mph.

Not bad for low hp, low rpm engine. Oh yea, stock tires suck.

Hey scar,

Impressive time. 102mph sounds like you were smoking the tires on take off. I have an 02 harley f150 haven't taken it to the track yet. Some of the guys in that fourm run in the 14's at 98mph.

You should be able to get some more out of her yet!!!

Never spun a tire off the line. Have to take off easy with these 235/85 - 16 10 plys. My 60' times were never better than 2.5 all night. I was loseing traction and having to back out about mid track. The track was slick all night. Stock tires suck. Still ran better than most of the gassers there.

The F250s, and other diesels perform nicely when you are going at 50MPH but it takes forever to get there, even with the turbo manual. I will remember your suggestion. The diesel engine does provide a lot of room for work, and improvement. So it would be a nice project.

I did not know that the low horsepower is the result of low RPMs which is surprising to me. It just amazed me that some of these diesels will put out 1000lb/ft torque but only had 340hp. Thanks for making me understand the physics of that better.

I dont know whose diesel your driving but its either a pile of crap or a Dodge. It takes me about half a second to get to 70. My truck has zero delay when I hit the accelerator. I think you need to take a ride in a decent PSD, might open your eyes a little bit.

Thumbs up

The 02' PSD do get up and go pretty quick. I can't wait for the 6.0 next year. It's going to have more horsepower and torque the the 7.3, weigh alot less and cost less to produce!! But instead I guess I'll have to pull my little trailer with my gasser

Actually, it was a 96 Chevy, if that qualifies as a piece of crap . I never experienced such a slow take off. I just drove it for ****s, and giggles. The engine was putting out good power, but it was pretty much rigged for hauling, and nothing else. That is why it moved so slow. It took me at least fifteen seconds to get up to forty miles per hour. But I am not trying to compare Fords, and Chevys. But that was just the one, and only time I drove a Diesel truck.

I think it is about time I ride a PSD.

Honda--do you have a PSD???

You have alot to learn about them still...

Its good you are on these forums though...

Its refered to as fuel mileage..because we dont burn gas...
your 300hp and 800ftlbs is off..usually 300hp is only about 650-700ft lbs...Fast burns are bad for performance, slow controlled burns are more desireable...

Swofford-I hope with the banks stuff, you are getting more then that...

Scar--if your figures are right, You have one of the fastest 97 I have ever heard of..Do you have the intercooler on yours and you must be running some kind of chip to get those numbers..
You have me beat by a full second...You have to be running propane as well...
