Any thing I should know about them. Both have a 5.4, but hows the trans in them. Just paid 2000 two weeks ago on mine. Now what a lose of 2000 for the trans.

I'm, not sure what you are planning on doing with this truck, but in my opinion the 5.4 is way underpowered for that truck.

Itll be my fish and hunt truck, will not be doing any heavy towing. Had a 5.4 in my f 150, I know its a lighter truck. But a friend has an 2000 F250 SCAB with a 5.4 says its just runs great. One reason for the CC is the price. and looks a clean truck. Don't know what the insurance will offer.

I'd be more concerned about the 5.4 3 valve than I would be about the tranny, the 5R110 is solid.

The 5.4 isn't really that underpowered, but it doesn't get very good gas mileage.

Yes I know, but most f150s that I can afford are 4.6s. Only few 5.4 in them. Have you taken a look? I don't think its bad for a crew cab at 9500$ The FX 4 is over my price range, but most 150s are going for that also. I like the 99-03s mostly. But will have to take a 04-08

If you find a 04-08 F-150 with a 4.6, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Yes, a bit underpowered, but as reliable as a tank.

Unless you like spending a lot of money on maintenance and dealing with cold weather issues, I wouldn't touch a 6.0 diesel with a 10 foot pole.

My 6.0 gets 20 MPG on the highway, and about 13-14 pulling my 9000 pound horse trailer. If well maintained and taken care of, a 6.0 can be a great engine. There are just a few things that need to be done like an EGR delete, and a firm maintenance schedule.

The 6.0 has a long history of issues that require mods to make them reliable. Diesels are inherently higher maintenance cost anyway - can you say 15 quart oil changes, more expensive oil filters and fuel filters (that need to be changed more frequently)? Have you ever tried to get a diesel started in severe cold weather?

Yes, I really do like the 4.6 for its history of great reliability - as I also like the 5.4 2 valve. If you want some reliable power and don't care about gas mileage, look for a F-250 with a V-10.

I have a friend with a stock unmodified 05 F-450 dualie crew with a 8 foot pickup bed kit on it with a 6.0, and it gets 12 mpg no matter how it's driven. It does do a nice job towing his 41 foot toyhauler.

I dunno how strict the OP's emission regs are, but my friend is in California, and he can't touch it, it has to stay stock.

Im an Armour crewman and have delt with Diesels for 30 plus yrs. Yes they are tank or LAV vehicles. But when I was a yng trooper did all my vehicle maint. Here in Ontario they sell the delete kit cheap. If I go the 250 SCAB Diesel, Ill order it. 7 hrs of my time will kill the wife. But at 159$ will save the heart ache if that's what it takes. A friend has a 99 F250 5.4 SCAB. Id buy it if he was selling. That thing is in great shape. and only 110K.

OP,
There are a few things that really need to be done with the 6.0, but I have found at this point, that most 6.0's already have the basic's done (EGR Delete, new oil cooler, Dummy Plugs and Stand-pipes and STC fitting). Head gaskets are the biggest thing by far, but running a stock tune and getting the EGR delete done are gong to greatly reduce the chance of Head Gasket failure. Oil changes at ford cost me $89 in the states and $129 in Canada and at most is twice a year thing. Fuel filters are $70 at autozone (motocraft) and I do them once a year. For me the improved fuel economy pulling pretty much anything more than 3000# vs. my 5.4, more than offsets the increased maintenance costs. Plus, like you I had to put a tranny in my F-150, but I don't expect to do that with my F-350, the tranny is stout.

On any forum, you will get everybody providing an opinion based on their choices (me, I have a 6.0 and am very happy with it. I get the same mileage as my old 2000 f-150 with way more power). Others have had great success and experience with continuing to go with Gasser's. But overall the cost operating once vs. the other is at a minimum if you tow. Long-term you are also going to see better re-sale with a diesel, even if it is a 6.0.

Good luck with making a choice! Get as much info as you can on any perspective purchase, if you really find one you like get the serial number, head to a dealer and ask for an oasis report on it's warranty service history. You don't want anything that was returned under the lemon law. Carfax can also help provide some history and should at least let you know where it was registered and how many owners had it.

F450 has a 4.88 rearend too. My F250 has 3.73. BIG difference there.
