V8 or V10??

V8 or V10??

I'm trading in my 150 for a 250, next month. I can't decide which engine to get. I don't tow much, but I like a truck with a lot of power. I'm not worried about mpg's. Which one will last longer? I have the 5.4 now, and I'm worried that it won't be enough for all that truck. It's going to be 5sp. manual w/ 4.10 gears. Please help me make a decision!

I went w/the V10 due to the size of the truck, I was I little worried about the 5.4 pulling all that weight around, not that I tow alot, but I plan on keeping this truck for some time and you never know what you may need to tow/haul. I had the 4.6 in my 97 f-150, never had the 5.4 though...Plus, to say you have a V10 just sounds cool..

I would strongly oppose getting the V8. The V10 gets close to the same mileage, with alot more power. I know a few people with an F-250 SD Reg Cab, with the V8, and they complain about it when additional weight is added. If you plan to pull all the time, the Powerstroke is the only way to go.

We went with the V10 too. With the 4x4 and crewcab we thought the V8 might be a little "weak". We have been very happy with it. Glad we went with the F250 Crew v. Supercrew everyday!!
Bigger is better!!

Thanks for the replies. I will be getting the v10, can't wait might order this month!! I just noticied w/ this engine I can't get the 4.10 gears, so it's the 3.73's that aren't available with ls, or the 4.30ls. Just wondering how many rpm's your running at going 70 on the highway with the 4.30? It just seems like a lot of gear to me.

Just curious, why do you want the 4.10 or 4:30? We got the
3:73 LS - we tow a 3,200# trailer - so it was plenty. Test drove a V8 w/4:10 - very high rev.

The 3.73LS isn't available with a 5sp. manual, I don't want an auto.

The V8 in the 250 and 350 is like the V6 in the F150 its got enough power to get it going but not enough for heavy loads or anything else.

I disagree. My 5.4L v8 with 4:10LS has plenty of power. Yes not as much as the v10 or the PSD, but pulls our boat and the car trailer loaded easily. If I would have ordered a truck yes I would probably opted for the v10, but I bought one off the lot. And $4700 for the PSD is too much. When the v10 will do almost what it will do. And yes I have drove all 3 in all different configurations. As I am a Ford technician and the only powerstroke tech in my county.

If you wait for a 2002, you can get the 6spd standard.

I agree with attitude. The 5.4L is not the dog that others here have made it out to be.. The 5.4L in the superduty feels about the same as the F150 with the 4.6L v8, (not the V6 as someone mentioned)..

However, you stated a few requirements:
- you like a truck with alot of power.. (the V10 has more power than the V8)
- you don't care about MPG's (again V10 is the way to go). The difference in milege between the v8 and V10 is about the same as between the PSD and the V8.. (I average 15.5 mpgs in mixed driving and 17.8 on the highway at 65mph).

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to try and find a V10 w/ the 4.30LS to test drive, before I decide. That is the only LS gear ratio available w/ the v10 w/ manual trans.
V10man, I think your sig. said you had the 4.30ls. Could you tell me how many rpm's your running on the highway going 70?

I believe it is around 2300 or so. Gimmie a few days to make sure.

Unless you plan on running much larger tires than stock or pulling a large trailer all the time go with 3.73's. Save the $300 for the limited slip and put it towards a good after market unit. Just my .02.

Thanks. Looks like I might go w/ the 350. I can get it w/ the 3.73LS and manual. Any ideas why it's available in the 350's and not the 250's? I'll only be putting 33x12.5 at's on the truck, but not until around 30,000 miles. Getting an aftermarket limited slip and having it installed, will cost me a lot more than 300 bucks. I'd rather just have factory LS.
