To me, this kind of technology is a step in the wrong direction, and down right fishy since the technology came out just in time to work down diesel MPG's in a time of un-presidented, skyrocketing fuel prices.
Regardless, think about how much more you could be getting when you're not dumping fuel off into the exuast, as long as they build vehicles with DPF's, you're going to be able to achieve large MPG increases by taking the system off.

As for my own 6.4, I can say that I've never taken a large mpg hit when going into regen. At best I've seen a .5 mpg drop.
I'd wager that it won't be too long before they really start cracking down on the removal of the emissions components. The 6.7 is already getting more power with room to grow and claims of fuel economy that will rival the 7.3 or any modded diesel out there. I just don't see how anyone can make a gripe about it if it's working. The 6.4 was just a test. Some have a problem with it, some don't. Only time will tell with this new one, but so far I'm reading of die hard 7.3 guys that are ready to hand over their beloved rigs for a 6.7.
I predict that within the next 12 months, I will buy a DPF/Cat Delete Pipe and Spartan Tuner...not because I have problems with the regen or fuel mileage, but because I have heard that removing them actually increases the longevity of the engine. Of course, mine will go back on the truck before any emissions testing!
Fenders come off pretty easily, but then there's the inner fenders which are welded and part of the crash structure. Cab is 6 bolts and a few connections... and bam. It's off.
